Having no listing fees is nice, but if no one is looking at your stuff it isn't worth it to save thirty cents. The listing fee is a pittance compared to the amount of traffic eBay gets for your item, and you are sure to get fair market value.

I don't think it is worth the trouble. Most items on there have no bids, and I am sure sellers just keep relisting stuff over and over again at the starting price they are hoping to get, kind of like Yahoo! Auctions was before they started charging.

And as nhbilly mentioned, eBay provides fraud protection and other good selling services like SafeHarbor and BillPoint.

Personally I think Ebay $ucks!!!! They never protect their sellers. I personally have been the victim of non-paying bidders (NPB) on many occasions. The worst that happens to an NPB is that they get a warning not to do that again. Once they get 3 strikes their account is suspended. Once you get two strikes you can just close your account and then open a new one to get around it. But if you are the seller who gets screwed you lose all of your listing fees. I think Ebay bites the big one. I am glad to see someone attempting to overtake them. And as far as their buyer protection goes it kind of reminds me of the movie Tommy Boy where Chris Farley says that he can put $hit in a box and put a guarantee on it but it is still just a piece of $hit. Just my 2 cents.

guiseppewv, That may be true but eBay has a lot of other competitors that provide better protection and lower fees (Yahoo! auctions comes to mind) but no one seems to be mentioning those.

I am kind of leary about this. On the FatWallet forum someone mentioned when he registered they billed his PayPal account $20 for no apparent reason. The majority of the closed auctions have no bids. Why bother building a reputation on a web site that won't be around in half a year.

Listing fees are small but significant enought that people don't auction SPAM. You see, an auction site is useless without listing fees because you never get serious sellers, just overpriced items. That's why nobody used Yahoo's auctions, they were full of brain-dead sellers looking for brain-dead buyers.

On eBay, you have small listing fee so it is not cost free to spam and keeps search results more relevant and forces goofy sellers out.
