Thread: When does DELL charge tax ???

Question When does DELL charge tax ???

Is it possible to order a computer from DELL and not be charged sales tax? I live in WA state and they always try to charge me tax.

I was not charged tax on orders from their peripherals section: printers, network cables, etc. But when I tried to jump on board APEX's $385.10 deal yesterday they wanted to charge me an extra $44 in tax.

They charge tax in the Small Business section, but not in their Home division. Well, not for most people that is.

Thanks! I think you are right. I put a $800 computer in my cart, but they want to charge me $9 tax on their "free" $99 shipping offer.

they say you have to pay tax when you buy from the home section. Who do you pay?

didn't quite understand the question.. but people in Texas for instance.. I believe they have to pay regardless of which section you purchase from.. because Dell is based there.

they are supposed to charge tax whenever the company has a physical presence in your state. so if they have any employees based in your state, expect to pay tax. The only way to get around it is to have a tax exempt id number.

well I recall when I purchased a laptop from them they said that there was no tax because I was purchasing from the home section. But the customer rep made sure to tell me "make sure to pay your tax after you get the laptop." I never quite understood what she meant

I was under the assumption that you had to pay tax on anything you order online, regardless of whether or not they have a prescence in your state. I mean, if you order stuff over the phone from a catalogue, you get taxed almost all the time. The reason you don't get charged sometime is companies are lazy or something...hehe

Anyway, when I bought my Inspiron 4000 a year and a half ago through the home section, I was charged $28 tax on a $1500 laptop. Guess they only taxed the parts and not the whole (battery, AC adaptor, etc)?

Nope. The states would love the power to tax all net transactions. Guess there's nothing killing the golden goose.

Currently, Internet sales are handled in the same way as catalog and telephone sales: If the retailer has a store in the purchaser's state, a sales tax is supposed to be added to the bill. But the Supreme Court has ruled that companies cannot be required to collect taxes in states where they have no physical presence.

I've ordered from Dell numerous times before and have never been taxed, except for the last order from Dell Small Business. The page said that I'd have to have paperwork on file with them in order not to pay tax.

I've always been taxed by other sites that have stores within my state (Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City).

I don't know about other states.. but as for us Californians.. We don't have to pay tax on Amazon, or Dell Home. Maybe they were just cheating some of you? And I wonder why they charge tax only in Small Business? I wonder if it has to do with because its a business, or if they have another division for Small Business within the state.
