    Jewelery allergy question...

My wife has an allergy to nickel, so she can't wear cheap jewelery or watches. She wants a watch for her birthday, and has directed me to the "Simply Whispers" web site, who have nickel-free watches. The best one they have is like $80.

Well, I know she can wear gold, but she told me she has had problems with gold-plated stuff.

I would really like to get her a nice watch (the one I'm looking at is a Cyma for $800) but it's gold plated. Solid gold is way too expensive for me. Now, the jeweler told me it's heavy (10 micron) 18K gold plated, not "flash" gold plated like the cheap stuff.

Does anyone have a nickel allergy and any experience with a "quality" gold plated item?

I have a nickel allergy, but I have never found a good gold-plated product. For this reason, I stay away from anything gold colored and only wear sterling silver or titanium jewelry now. I really love my titanium watch, so maybe you might want to consider the metal as well.

My skin turns lots of cheap watches and bracelets green, so I am very particular with the watches I wear. I bought a really nice gold/stainless Geneva watch at a jewelry auction and that's what I usually wear now.
    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

Forget it. Gold plate will not work. It doesn't matter how thick the plate is.

i think the biggest problem with a watch is that a watch shifts around on your arm enough that the gold plating on the inside of the band will be worn off rather quickly, even if it is a "thick" 10 micron finish.

    10 microns isn't very much....

Hey, thanks for everybody's help. I was able to find out from the manufacturer that it is made of "316LS Surgical Stainless Steel" under the gold plate and is guaranteed to be nickel-free.

Good choice. I was going to recommend surgical steel. I have allergies, too. I put a cheesy watch on and I get more clusters than....well, I don't know, but it's pretty nasty I tell ya!!
