yeah, i didn't expect this guitar to be "affordable" to me..

actually stretched my budget quite a bit...

    but yeah...
seeing that most places were selling this for around 1900 +, i couldn't resist. got it for 1700+change (guitar = 1599 + case + tax)

Heh....there are many guitars that are a LOT more than that...

$300 is like for those Costco Yamaha starter kit deals.

excuse me...but you can get a "starter kit deal" for like $100 at guitar center. i wouldn't buy a guitar from costco unless it was a real brand. and i wouldn't recommend anything less than $300. but you're right that $300 isn't a "real guitar" price.

i got a decent classical guitar for $300 a few years back. it's not top of the line, but it has good tone and i like the neck. the classical i'd like is a bit more, tho

Obviously Leon doesn't have as much spare cash as we think. Sure he's got the Gibson Les Paul Custom, but look at that POS Squier amp. What's it 15W?

is it a POS just cuz it's a squier? i mean, it's an amp. the way i see it, it's not a tube amp...so with all solid state stuff, then it's just making a signal louder. if you already have good tone going into the amp, then the amp doesn't have to sweeten it any. add a couple of pedals and you're fine.

as far as it being 15w: i play out of a 10w. my 100w per channel, 2 channel amp might bug the neighbors a tad. but the 10w is also a sears tube amp. i get really great tone out of it, and i could even use it with a PA if i wanted to project more.

but as far as having all those guitars...from that standpoint, maybe he coulda considered a fender tweed or some ish and aced a couple of the not-so-favored axes.

We're still trying to figure out whose Squire amp that is. It just appeared one day. I use a Marshall JCM 2000 - DSL 401 all tube amp.

    I think the axe is a 2001 or 2002 1957 Reissue.

i disagree somewhat. i know that when i was looking for amps, i tried out some marshall, crate, and danelectro amps. all around 10" speakers @ 10-15 watts. none of them put out great sound. i bought the danelectro, because it was decent and i could get it for around $50.

but on all of those cheap, "practice" amps, the sound isn't very clean, the tone is poor, there is a lot of unintentional distortion, etc. also, they don't produce particularly good sound at low volume (not enough juice to drive the speakers) but at higher volumes, the poor tone and distortion become more evident.

of course, it's not a big deal to me, because i'm not a great guitarist and i was getting the electric and amp just to play around with. but i do know that my friends who have much larger, higher-quality solid state amps get much better sound from them.

btw, where do you guys get your tube amps? ebay?

well, sound is always important. if the amp is gonna destroy your sound, then i'd agree that that is not the amp for you. but if the amp takes the same signal and just makes it louder...then it depends on what goes in. my comment about the squier was just that it can't be a crappy amp just based on the name. if you play a squier and it does sound good, then it's still a good amp. and ya, i've played some low-end amps that sounded good (none of the negative stuff you mentioned, except at high volume). and ya, a more expensive amp can sweeten the sound, but again, if your sound is already good going in, then it should be good coming out of any amp i'd play. i guess the thing is just to try out the amp before buying it.

i bought both of my tube amps at swap meets ("flea markets", to you east coasters ), oddly enough. when i see something good and the person doesnt know what it is, i tend to jump on it . the sears practice amp was tucked in with some other amps of lesser value, and i guess they just thought it was some old, beat-up amp. i saw that it was old, so i just honed in on the back panel and, sure enough, saw tubage! i took a chance since i couldnt exactly try it out first, but many swap meet sellers will do the honorable thing if you buy their stuff and wanna return it cuz it's broke or whatever. but when i got it home i cleaned it up and it sounded great

the peavey 100w 2 channel amp isnt in the original cabinet. again, they didnt seem to know what it was worth, probably because of the ugly cabinet. back when it was made, cabinets had this habit of catching fire if they got too hot, so this one was obviously a result of a similar thing. anyhow, i got it for less than $100 i think, including a 15 inch speaker which i no longer have. so i'm not playing it right now, but i know it will be there when i need it

if you look on ebay, you can find some small tube amps. electar (by gibson)makes a tube 10 and a tube 30. the 30 they dont make any more but you can sometimes find it. they are supposedly pretty good lil amps. the tube 10 has a pre and power tube and sells NEW for about 120.

there are some other "off" brands of tube amp that you may find for cheap. like univox, kalamazoo. keep look in they are out there.

oh, as far as new tube amps, i'd stick with trace-elliot. i mean, that could be just me. plug into one and see, i'm sure. maybe you can get a fender tweed (repro) or something. i really dunno about the new stuff. count me as lost in that area.

are new tube amps (other than the t-e's) any good?
