anime noob, where do I start?

so, I dunno anything about anime, nor have I ever been into anime (and comics, and comic books, etc, etc, etc)....and well, with all the talk of anime, I wanna see what the fuss is about.
what are some good anime's to watch?
    must watch
    and really cool series.
    etc.etc.etc.

    thanks for your suggestions.

i'm not a very experienced anime watcher either but i got into it all because of robotech. to me, that's my first love. also, neon genesis evangelion was pretty good. a little weird, but good.

i'm sure others can give you more info...

    My suggestions for movies:

    Kenshin OAV
    Grave of the Fireflies
    Princess Mononoke
    Ninja Scroll

    My suggestions for series:

    Kenshin
    Berserk
    Cowboy Bebop
    Fushigi Yuugi
    Escaflowne
    Robotech/Macross

There are a bunch to choose from, and these are only a few to get you started. Most anime is either science fiction or fantasy, but there are anime movies and series from just about every genre you could think of.

<edit> PS, Fushigi Yuugi is a great series to watch with the GF.

If you want you can spend 8 bucks and see if "Spirited Away" is playing in a theater near you. Same person who did Princess Mononoke and some others.

If you like long series, Robotech is a good start.
If you like cutesy maybe Ah! My Goddess.

cowboy bebop is better subbed in jap. which gundam? the original? its pretty good...but yuyu hakusho is better subbed too...it seems all those lousy dubbers are kinda...er...not as able to place thier feelings into the character. kenshin dubbed is horrid, his voice is...what 2-3 tones deeper?

    that better be a joke...

lets see here. THE BEST series would probably be Initial D. (i've heard rumors a 4th stage is in progress, YAY!)

Hajime no ippo is pretty good, but i don't believe anyone has completed subbing it and i can't find it for sale...

I'll have to agree on kenshin, it's pretty tight.

    Noir is good as well.

Kimagure Orange road is good, if you like the romanticish comedy kinda stuff.

I've been watching Inuyasha and Hikaru no go lately.... and I'm not sure why.

I seriously suggest that you watch Kenshin TV series before watching Kenshin OAV, it will make more sense that way.

These are all good anime's to watch, but it really depends on your mood.

Patlabor-- this is a good one, well written! Esp the oav/movies.
Ninja Scroll -- This is a good example of a bad ass!
    Love Hina
Cowboy Bebop -- one of my all time favorites!
    Ghost in a Shell
    Great Teacher Onizuka
Evangelion -- with Death/rebirth another of my all time favorites!

Man so many Anime's so little time!

Only thing i hate about dragonball z is how the voices change...

after they kill freeza the first time, they get new voice actors..and they suck

Warning: Princess mononoke sucked! Very bad story and the fight scenes sucked. Worst dvd I ever bought.
Ninja Scroll and NS2 Jubei's Revenge are my 2 favorites.
    Ghost in shell
    Macross series
Street fighter and some of the other game based anime are cool cuz you'll be familiar w/ the characters.
I wish they'd do a some X-men anime or a Lord of the Rings by the guy who did ninja scrolls.

don't make me lay the smack down. your warning should be:

Warning: I'm the only person who thinks Princess mononoke sucked! I don't know any japanese culture so I was lost throughout the entire movie. Best dvd I ever bought, but too stupid to realize it.

comon R lighten up its only a movie........

BTW what in hell does that have to do with Japanese culture? For all you know I'm Japanese and I still hate that boring pathetic excuse of a feature length anime flick.

Thats like asking someone to accept someones feces as art cuz their culture dictates that it is. How bout i think buying used panties is sick or maybe im not "understanding the culture."
(Did you catch that mr culture man?)

That movie no more represents Japanese culture than Donald Duck represent American culture.

Unwind brother, I'll even let you buy my copy of Monosucky!

ps: why dont we let attgig be the judge. a movie should stand on its own two feet not some weird code that only ultra geeks or overly sensitive buddha heads get.

Sorry, I sometimes forget to include people on my inside jokes... that was some anime club peoples rationalization for why people saw them as weird. while that being a warp rationalization, it still holds some truth to it. Here is probably the best example I can think of: Austin Powers 3. My friend just got back from japan and he saw it over there. He and his japanese were the only people who laughed throughout the entire movie cause they were the only people that understood the humor.

That's where i draw the line buddy. Feces IS art! at least according to some ass patron who visited the theater i worked at. we never caught them, but they just loved to share their art with the rest of the world on the bathroom stalls. I think i just said too much and deviated from the subject.

dude, that's the least of those sicko's problems. I could go on that subject forever. (btw, if you don't like the soiled underwear, perhaps you would like a vial of urine. maybe you don't like the whole golden thing so your still able to get a vial of saliva.) so to your question if I caught that, yes. I've been exposed to that a little more than i would like

I'm always relaxed... although I should probably start laying off the alcohol every day though. i'm getting too used to it.

anyways, here are my true feelings about why the movie is good: all those white little head bobber thingies (it's been a while since i've seen it, so i don't remember the name.)

I dunno, maybe It's just Studio Ghibli's style. Have you seen any other work of thiers?
