Madonna Crowned Best of the Female Greats

"Material Girl" Madonna has had another No. 1 chart success -- this time heading a poll for music's 100 top female artistes.

She romped home to the No. 1 spot with 17 percent of votes cast by viewers of VH1 music channel in a poll to find the greatest women in music over the past 50 years.

With a career covering 19 years, 12 albums, three world tours and 60 million album sales, the star with the ever-changing public image, beat a galaxy of performers.

VH1 said Friday that over 750,000 votes were cast.

Kylie Minogue confirmed her popularity, winning second place in the top five, ahead of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin.

Kate Bush, forever famous for her 1978 debut single Wuthering Heights, was best-placed British singer, in 10th place.

Britney Spears was 9th, with fellow Americans ahead of her -- Tina Turner (6); Mariah Carey (7) and Janet Jackson (8).

Most of the greats made it into the chart. Barbra Streisand (22), Dusty Springfield (30), Shirley Bassey (45), Dolly Parton (47) and Kirsty McColl (74)

Billie Holiday came in at 50th, Yoko Ono 99th and in 100th spot was Erykah Badu.

Where to even start. Yeah a few listed there should be in the top 100 but c'mon. Kylie Minogue 2nd? Britney 9th? Obviously this poll sucks.

I can actually understand. She is VERY popular, album sales play a BIG part on who gets awards nowadays (i.e. Ashanti's recent award), she gives people the shock value that they want. I don't think she is a "gifted" vocalist, but she's a good "technical" vocalist (anyone can be with a LOT of practice and the best coaches). But she knows that.

I have to admit although I don't like all of her music, there are a few songs that I did really like in the past (cherish, holiday, secret, vogue).

Giving people what they want plays a big role. I mean, in general, it takes guts and character to do something that's against the grain of the general public because of principle and your values and that certainly applies to making quality music.

I think Madonna SHOULD be #1. She obviously has the most lasting power, appeal, style, popularity, and success. Kylie Minogue being second i'm not sure. Okay, I'm not flamin ya but...a HAS been??

You can't call someone whose career has been significant for paving the way for other artists and a pioneer (although, there are definatly others) for a particular genre a HAS been just because her contribution was in the past.

That's why I had such a problem with Ashanti winning that award. It was called the "Aretha Franklin Lifetime Achievement Award" or something like that, I forget. I know when I heard it, I was kinda puzzled. I think she's talented and beautiful, but her success has really rode on the hard earned success of MANY other artists and she has yet to contribute to music like they have. Although, I believe she will (or has the potential to) as years go by.

As for that list, it's not always quality thats popular. I think a lot has to do with how much record companies "invest" in thier artists.

VH-1 viewers believe that between 1952 and 2002 the top three female performers are Madonna, Kylie, and Celine.

Pick any other broadcaster/publication and wonder whom they (and their readers/viewers/listeners) would pick as "the greatest women in music over the past 50 years." I guarantee the results would be different.

The period of 1952-2002 also included Ella Fitzgerald, Janis Joplin, Astrud Gilberto, the aforementioned Aretha Franklin, Linda Ronstadt, Courtney Love, Peggy Lee, Dinah Shore, and countless others. Each of them were groundbreakers in their day, and have had some influence over the industry. Not having them in the VH-1 top 10 is, frankly, no surprise, and truthfully, not a big deal.

This reminds me of the music polls radio stations used to do in the 1970s. One year, a radio station awarded the song "Afternoon Delight" as the all-time greatest rock'n'roll song of all time.

This is no different.

i think that there may be better choices than madonna for #1, but she is at least a vaid contender.

and as much as i hate celine dion, i think she at least deserves a place in the top 100 due to her extrmely high world-wide appeal over the last decade.

but to put some 2-hit wonder like britney in the top 10 makes a mockery of the entire poll

on another note, if we're going to just vote on how hot they are, then i say that Kylie Minogue is #1

Really?? There HAVE to be other women on that list (or even off the list) in the music industry that are "hotter" than her.

I watched a thing on who are the 100 sexist people as per VH-1 and Vogue magazine, number 1 was Madonna also.

i wasn't being 100% serious, but based on the names mentioned in the article -- Madonna (i never found her that attractive), Barbra Streisand (ugly, imo), Dusty Springfield (NOT ATTRACTIVE), Shirley Bassey (decent, but not that hot), Dolly Parton (i'm not a fan of her looks), Kirsty McColl (bad face), Celine Dion ( ), Whitney Houston (ok, but not great), and Aretha Franklin (ok), Britney Spears (hot, but in a very slutty sort of way), Tina Turner (decent), Mariah Carey (doesn't really do it for me), and Janet Jackson (not a fan), Kate Bush (decent), Billie Holiday (pretty, but not necessarily hot), Yoko Ono ( ), and Erykah Badu (eeh...whatever) -- i would pick Kylie Minogue as having the best combination of sex appeal, a pretty face, and a fine body.

obviously, that's extremely subjective -- it's just my opinion

and i definitely think there are more beautiful and "hotter" women than kylie out there in the music world....but the article didn't mention any of them.
