Equipment contrast not up to par? Try bias lighting
Checkershadow Illusion
You can really improve perceived contrast by adding bias lighting to your home theater. You want to use very dim, colorless lights (d65 ideally), which shine away from the screen. This especially helps with dark movies.

Yep, I moved one of the lamps in the room around and really helps out the tube.
