Question

I'm not too familiar with what a good speed for the DVD-Rom to be but I want it to be at least 32x CD-Rom speed. Any price is good for now. Can someone please help?

the speed of a dvd-rom drive is actually misleading. the only difference between a 1x drive and a 10x drive is the seek time. a 1x drive will play a dvd just as well as a 10x drive, but if you do any searching or jumping around between chapters, the 10x would be 10 times faster at doing so. i have a toshiba 8x and am quite pleased.

you only need a fast dvd drive if you're playing dvd games. But since those are rare, who cares. But a fast dvd drive also means a fast cdrom. The fastest so far is only a 40x cdrom that I know of. I heard sometime ago that philips came out with a single chip dvd rom that does 12x dvd and 52x cd. even the 16x dvd now only do 40x cd.

As always, Computer Geeks has some pretty good deals on Creative (as in the Soundblaster company) DVD-ROM drives. I think they had a 6x with decoder card for $92 yesterday, which sounds pretty good. I haven't really used these drives though, and to be honest, I haven't been very satisfied with my Creative CD-ROM drive experiences.
