    Formatting a HD in XP

For anyone interested my saga started in the Hardware forum but since this question is OS related, I'll ask it here.

When I tried to format the new drive I received an error message that it was in use. Do I need to log-in as the administrator to format a HD? When I went to the Disk Management Tools there was no information about either drive. I received some message about a certain application not being installed or "clipped." Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Restart and boot from the XP cd. Choose "repair an installation." then it will give you the option to format.

Uhm, I'm pretty unclear whats your setup. . . are you trying to format an additional hard drive or your boot drive? Disk manager should be able to format the new additional drive. If not, you should make sure the jumpers on the drive are set right, the ide cables are put in right and in all the way and the power cables are in.

    log in as admin

under sdministrative tools coose computer manage managememnt and unsin the disk snap in partition and format your frive

    alternate way

    use boot disk

    bootdisk.com

and then f-disk and format from the prompt

the option you choose depends on how big your drive is. some large drive partitions i forget he limit of fat like 40 GB or soemthing any larger partition i think you have to use NTFS or make smaller partitions.

Thanks. I'm cooking with gas. If only I can get these drive letters straightened out (see HD post in Hardware).
