US army soldiers run over by US tank

**um, please move to off-topic forum**

did any of you read or hear about 2 army soldiers that were run over by a 68 ton army tank during a routine exercise at some place here in the US? it reminds me of the incident in korea where 2 girls were run over my a US army tank and koreans protested. i'm guessing that it must have been an accident then if the same thing happened to our own soldiers. crazy. getting run over by a 68 ton block of metal.

Stuff like this happens. I wouldn't doubt if the guy driving was just a Private. I used to read the Stars and Stripes when I was in Germany and they would report on accidents like this all the time.

It does suck though. I'll drink two beers for them tonight.

maybe this is like, really naive or whatever, but don't tanks move rather slow? so if you saw this big hunk of metal getting rather close to you, wouldn't u just jump outta the way? i'm sure you can't miss it coming towards you! i keep envisioning something like from the Austin Powers movie, where the tank is putting forward and the guys are just standing there...
    Have a groovy day!

The Army's M1A2 Abrams tank has a 1,500 horsepower gas turbine engine that can get the tank going over 40 MPH.

Depends on a bunch of things. Here are a couple of scenarios off the top of my head.

    1) There was a lot of noise around and they didn't notice.

    2) They were lying down asleep at the time.

    3) Tanks drive by that area often enough that if you heard a tank, you wouldn't really give it a second thought.

    4) A really cute girl was walking by at the time and they were distracted.

    etc...

i asked my dad, vietnam vetran, and he said that that doesnt suprise him one bit. statistically he said that more men died in routine military exercises/ drills in the US than in combat (not valid during war times). he said that while he was a drill sargent they had men dying from getting run over or crushed by machinery to heat exhaustion. he was almost crushed between to trucks once while he was inspecting supplies.

How can people die in combat when they're not in combat?

well the biggest conflict that would prove my point is the conflict were in right now and Desert Storm, and my dads talking from the stand point when he was reinstated in the military during teh Desert Storm campaign. He was over there training troops and said that they had more troops die from normal operations than in combat.

the precisness of statement to the MAX!

Yeah, but desert storm was a war. What I was asking was how can someone die from combat in the periods when we don't have wartime. Of course more people would die of accidents then. I am much more likely to die from an accident than from a bar fight if I you don't count the times that I'm involved in bar fights.
