I have an idea that will solve the world's energy problem

So I was reading that one thread about oil and remembered an idea I thought of a while back. Ok, let's say we can create a type of fluid that is lighter than water (so it floats like oil) but it has to be environmentally friendly. This solution is basically a liquid solar cell and it would be spread out on the oceans. Then we'll set up buoys (sp?) that will collect and relay the solar energy capture by surrounding liquicells back to a main station.

Oh actually... this wouldn't work because first of all I doubt we can make enough to cover the oceans, and secondly the currents would definitely screw things up.

Ok. I just presented an idea and vetoed it myself... how's everyone doing?

well, you're also wanting it to conduct the power back to a central plant. in which case you're also gonna change the temperature and possibly other properties of the ocean. then there's zoning and other variables that can't be contained across that broad an area. also, even if it's environmentally friendly, how will it affect each species that surfaces in the goop? and how much will adhere to boats and ships and such? plus that which washes ashore...how much will be lost just to beaches and piers?

I have another idea...how about get get lots and lots of hampsters and make them run in their hampster wheels...that would make tons of energy...but than...you have to take into account food and poop...but thats a minor problem!!!

    For starters:

Solar panels on top of every commercial building in the country.

Ground-source heat pumps for every building (new construction only).

Higher minimum fuel-economy requirements for every non-commercial vehicle.

Tax credits for businesses to encourage them to let large number of employees telecommute (this would reduce fuel consumption). There's no technical reason why I can't perform my level-one telephone tech support duties from home.

Ban trucks with more than two axles from roads during commute hours. Less traffic = higher roads speed = better fuel economy.

Laptop technology in desktop PCs - lower power consumption.

one could argue that it would be better to put trees and lush vegetation on the top of every commerical building, thereby reducing global warming, decreasing atmospheric CO2 levels, and making urban sprawl less of an environmental impact

Solar panels on roofs? Good idea. To implement we should offer tax incentives on equipment. Also there should be a way to sell your excess energy to the electric company or even other consumers at a decent price.

    Same with heat pumps

I like your other ideas as well.

    Cold fusion? Not possible
But what's wrong with hot fusion held in magnetic confinement. Creating a minisun of a sort. With this much energy we can split water into hydrogen and oxygen, thus storing energy that can be used at a later time. Or we could even store the energy in antimatter. If we then run our cars off of fuel cells, we have 0 polution. I wonder if we'll still call the Hydrogen stations "gas stations" I suppose gas would then be a bit more litteral.
As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.

Why don't we just blow up the whole damn planet and end this (heh, and all other) debates once and for all?? All in favor, go kill yourselves.

Here's something constructive (in contrast to my previous post )

If everybody, individuals as well as companies, took care of the little things it'd make a huge difference. Quit sending me 5 pieces of junk mail everyday that I invariably throw out without looking at. Stuff like this is ENORMOUSLY wasteful. Imagine how much energy it takes to produce and transport junk mail to every person across the entire country. (I think it is safe to assume that nearly everybody gets junk mail). I'd be willing to bet that well over 90% of the cost of junk mail goes to pay for wasted energy. Plus it is annoying as all hell. Over two months ago I called that Sweedish Mattress company and asked them to stop sending me their junk because I've no interest in buying a $2000 mattress. They said "okay, we'll take you off the list immediately". I said "so now I'm off the list, no more junk in the mail, right?" "Yes" they said. Since then I've gotten two more mailings (one yesterday). The other day I got a flier and 40% off coupon from Fashion Bug that's addressed to Ms. Randall (my last name). THERE IS NO MS. RANDALL. I'VE NEVER BEEN TO A FASHION BUG, NOR COULD I TELL YOU WHERE ONE IS IF YOU THREATENED MY LIFE. STOP SENDING ME CRAP. AAAAARRRRGH BLEAAURLWLEUUAF *^(!@#%!^%!^%!@#%^#(!_(#&*^

    *ahem*

sorry 'bout that. As I was saying, there are a lot of wasteful practices that are used by companies world-wide that really don't do anyone much good. Yeah, I know junk mail must be effective to at least some small degree else they wouldn't use it. But considering the amount of energy it wastes versus the negligible gain, I think that it would be very responsible and commendable if the companies that do this stuff would knock it off. Oh yeah, turn off the lights when you leave the room, etc. [gets off soap box]
