    Cool Update on job promotion

Here's an update from this thread where I was asking how to ask the bizzoss for a raise. I waited and waited until when I though it would be the best time to ask, which I believed to be last Friday. That day marked the day that I had been at my work for exactly 1 year, and I was scheduled for a yearly review. I took some of your advice, and basically said that I wanted to make sure that I was working at a level indicated by my job title. I told him that I thought I was working at the next step up, and gave him a list of things that my position does, and a list of the next postion up. He looked at it for about 10 seconds, and said "ok"

I haven't given him a money figure yet, because first I have to go through an application process(UC system rules) and after it hopefully gets approved, that's when we will negotiate. But so far so good, step 1 is accomplished. Thanks for all those great suggestions in the last thread. Wish me luck!

Way to go! Now you know - if you don't ask, you sure won't get anything, but if you do ask, you just might!

Wow, whoever suggested that you try that must be pretty smart!

I'm curious, what are you doing at UCLA because a lot of the departments there have set pay depending on your title. So, if he is promoting you up a step, then he might be assuming that you'd get paid what the next step up gets paid. Ex: Lab Helper step 1,2,3... Lab assistant step 1,2,3... etc... All of those steps get paid a specific amount.

Actually I work at UCSD. I hear what youre saying about what the next step gets paid, but for every step there is a range of pay. Right now I am at the midpoint of the range of pay for 1st level Programmer Analysts. I am (hopefully) going to be promoted to the 2nd level, and so once it is decided that I am worthy of the title, then it is up to my boss to determine where in that range I should be paid. I am going to ask him to put me at midpoint of the 2nd level. It's a jump, but according to my HR person, it's doable. My department rakes in a lot of cash, and so my boss wants to keep the department functioning as smoothly as possible. For that reason he might be able to justify the big pay jump.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes!

Actually I am in the process of moving to Pacific Beach, which is the city south of La Jolla. Eventually I might end up in LJ, but only for convenience. La Jolla is full of snobby yuppers and college kids. PB is much more livable
