    Trent Lott

WASHINGTON (CNN) --President Bush sharply rebuked incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott for comments that some have called racist, saying any suggestion that segregation was acceptable is "offensive and it is wrong."

    Update!

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2002Dec10.html
Twenty-two years ago, Trent Lott, then a House member from Mississippi, told a home state political gathering that if the country had elected segregationist candidate Strom Thurmond to the presidency "30 years ago, we wouldn't be in the mess we are today." The phrasing is very similar to incoming Senate Majority Leader Lott's controversial remarks at a 100th birthday party for Thurmond last week.
then of course there is the video of strom back in da day:

damn, he was old even back then

Yeah...I don't think he can apologize his way out of this one at all. He's made similiar comments before so I'd say he's pretty much through. Someone stick a fork in him...he's done.

    i hope he's done.

i've cut trent lott a lot of slack (no pun intended). through all the crap about him speaking to supposed white power groups and all that stuff, i maintained that it was just "innocent".

he was ignorant of the group's objective and he wasn't really racist or anything like that.

but this does it for me, especially with the revelation that he said THE SAME THING 20 years ago. even saying it once is inexcusable, imo. but you don't just innocently slip up without thinking about what your words really mean TWICE. you'd say something different each time.

but no, in 1980 and in 2002, trent lott seems to believe that if we had elected a segregationist and unabashed racist to the presidency, we would have eliminated "a lot of problems". WTF kind of problems do you eliminate by electing a racist?

and i hope no one pipes up with the argument that strom's campaign was all about states' rights. all you have to do is look at his campaign statements and it's obvious that it was a campaign for racism, by racism, and about racism. and if trent lott can't see that, he has more problems then just being a closet racist.

I'm probably about the most hard-core Republican here and I think it's time for him to fade away. At first I thought it was stupid that the Democrats were trying to make hay out of his dumb comment, but a lot of racist crap is starting to float to the top of Lot's political septic tank. His true colors are starting to show, and we don't need that in the Republican party.

Not here in California, it's a Democratic stronghold... even though I hate Gray Davis. Bush doesn't have a shot in hell to win the Golden State. And California is America baby. We have the Three Time Champion Lakers (yes they are in a slump) the Team of the 80's the 49ers, the Baseball Champs The Angels, We have Disney, Magic Mountain, beaches, Ski slops, Hollywood, The Gay Bay, The WNBA champion the Sparks, the Missions, Yosemite, the UC System, and many other wonderful things. What do you have?

Oh yeah you have Jesse the Body Ventura He rules

    Cali baby!!

i would contend that map is a rather poor way to give a measure of america.

    land area is not everything.

    But it sure looks cool!

    More bad news about Lott:

Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott helped lead a successful battle to prevent his college fraternity from admitting blacks to any of its chapters, in a little-known incident now four decades old.

"In 1997, Lott told TIME: "Yes, you could say I favored segregation then. I don't now. … The main thing was, I felt the federal government had no business sending in troops to tell the state what to do."

Huh. Trent Lott like segregation as a way to rebel against the federal government.... this guy is nuts....

As others have said, if this was a one time occurence, it might be thought of a "what the hell were you thinking" moment. Even after the initial apology, {tepid & half assed}, then everyone would move eventually on. But since its happened repeatly, time for Lout to step down. Even Thurmond decades ago discarded the discredited policies the Dixiecrats stood for.

    editorial Apology not good enough

Its up to Mississippians in 2006 to dump the Lout.

Never did like that guy, too much of a slickster.

Because the parts of California that Bush carried are all desert. If you look at the map, LA and the Bay area and I think SD were all carried by the Dems. The only thing left is grape vines and desert.
