If you were to buy each component individually using Pricewatch and build it yourself, you'd pay about $375 for the parts. (delivered)

    Intel Celeron @ 2.0 GHz ($86 Googlegear.com)
    Shuttle MV42N Motherboard ($62 Ajump.com)
    40GB 7200RPM Western Digital ($73 7BYTES)
    3.5" Black Floppy Disk Drive ($11.50 cnetpc.com)
    256 MB Kingston PC2100 DDR Memory ($66 FTIComputer.com)
    Acer BenQ 40x12x48x CD-ReWriter ($45 Memorylabs.com)
    Multimedia 3D Sound (onboard)
    10/100Mbps Network Adapter (onboard)
S3 Savage 4 DDR Graphics (onboard)
    Case - ???????? ($35)?

You could save about $75 more by buying the Memory, CD-RW and Hard Drive from deals here at the GA forums.

So, buy the parts, put it together yourself and save $170

If you gotta get a pre-built system, buy a Dell dude !

In your list to build it your self you are missing the cost of a operating system and various other programs. I'm sure that price included a one year no hassle waranty.

I'm sure it could be built for cheaper ordering from pricewatch...but you have to ask yourself how reliable are those stores? I have messed with those companies before and they often send the wrong item or take weeks to ship out your order...my friend got his pc in a week and didn't have to mess with any stores or putting the system together

wow just checked the store again... price droped to $429 so check it out!

I have a feeling someone here works for Hybridgear.

Also, you could still save $130 buying the components and building it yourself.

Note: The ad doesn't mention any software included. To me, the webpage looks like someone in their basement selling rigs on the web.

For that price I would buy a Dell, at least I would know who I was getting it from. I can probably find hundreds of places on the web with prices like this, but you can never be sure whether they will be there for you when something goes wrong.

You are absolutely right chadlnc, my only point was that you cant always build them cheaper.

Dude, your going to hell if you get a dell. My school has dells and they are the worst. My main problem with dell is that you cannot upgrade, the use entirely proprietary hardware. So after a year or even 2 years of use you have to through out bc you cant upgrade. Dell has 110 watt PSU's that work great with constant electricty, but we dont live in a perfect world. I have been in some forums where they tried to change the OS on the dell and it messed up, go here for the full detail: http://forums.techbargains.com/tm.as...74&p=1&tmode=1 . Also I can go pricewatch a machine too, nothing like ordering your computer from 10 different merchants, then hoping everything works together, plus your time and labor of puting it together. also case plus PSU got to cost more than 35 bucks.

ok, so who in this thread DOESN'T work for hybridgear?

And as someone who has worked hardware support on Dells for the past 2 years, you can actually upgrade them - but you aren't buying a dell for that reason. As a business machine, they are unmatched.

Having said that, that gamer laptop looks interesting, and much cheaper than the Alienware. I'd be interested in reviewing one.

I have no idea what this guy in the thread is complaining about. I never worked in MIS, but am knowledgeable for the most part when it comes to computers (I have built my own rigs in the past). I got my Dell 8250 just over 2 weeks ago. Shipped with XP, reformatted and installed Win2k. Been running puuuurrfectly for the last 2 weeks, it has not been turned off only restarted when necessary after installing services packs and other software that required it.

All in all it's been running like a dream. Oh and I opened up the case, and added an additional driver and swapped out the GF4 MX it shipped with to my GF4 Ti4600. In additional I threw in my PCI Wireless LAN card and no problems there either. All is running perfectly. Perhaps I just got lucky?

Anyway, I do agree that Dell is the way to go if you can find a sweet enough deal. Oh and my 8250 (P4 2.4Ghz) cost me only $70 after rebates. Now THAT'S a deal.

Dell and Proprietary HW? Maybe Packard Bell...

but that certainly isn't true anymore. Packard Bell used to do that with reused components and whatnot, but nowadays Dell is all OTS parts. Swap in, swap out, understand Daniel-son?

was the $70 deal that k-12 student deal?
Also that guy was having trouble with his 4500, i just wanted to point out dell isnt a super computer what everyone thinks but i would by a dell laptop. It could just be all the dells i have ever seen have had problems. i personally build my own systems.

One main reason to buy from Dell, Gateway, HP or Compaq is the warranty. These are not fly-by-night outfits.

Buying from any other website is a real gamble. Most of the time you are buying "as-is" since they disappear overnight sometimes.

If you purchase the components (retail-boxed), you have the mfgs warranty on every component and the satisfaction of building it yourself. You can also fix it without paying someone else most times.

*** I would just buy a Dell, they are always running specials and the only company that I know of that you can buy factory direct. Watch for the Dell's on the deals page.

Dell just had a very similar 2Ghz computer advertised for $369 with free shipping. Saw it posted on all the forums.

    It came with Windows XP

you know, i rarely come to this forum, and threads like the remind my why. you're so right about the site! what a joke. check out the ordering page, completly non-secure and non-validated. you can submit an order with garbage in all the text boxes.
yeah, pretty much we missed the boat on that one. but it's still here. get you some.

what does spam posting in the spam forum have to to with the quality of our site? This isn't anything we are pushing.

I think he is more referring to the Spam/Referrals forum instead of the entire G|A? forums

of course, I could be totally wrong, but I think that was the original intention.

Right Right! ONLY referring to the Spam/Referrals forum, certainly not to the site as a whole. i love this place...lots of cool folks around here plus i've saved* a pile 'o cash.

*actually, I don't really know if it count's as saved, 'cause i've certainly spent some loot that i probably wouldn't have otherwise b/c of posted deals.
