Random reboots

My parents computer is a 1600+ on a MSI KT3 Ultra 2 mobo. It runs winXP Pro (legal copy)and has Crucial RAM (256 MB PC2700)

anyways, the system randomly reboots. There will be no warning, and it will happen at any time, and it not bound to any specific task. I am stumped. The voltages and everything appear to be fine, and it runs under 40 degrees celcuis under a full load.

Any suggestions? Its really annoying me since I dont have my mac setup yet, and this damn thing keeps rebooting.

I have two of these motherboards - make sure you have the latest BIOS update and the latest drivers for the chipset and the onboard components. That has been a problem for me in the past, but now both machines run rock-solid (it's a very good overclocking board too)

I have a similar system doing this but with a Gigabyte motherboard. I believe it is the power supply and I will be installing it on Thursday but I just noticed a new BIOS and driver updates and will try those as well.

40 degrees celcius under a full load is acceptable. My bet is the PSU.

Actually 40C under full load is good for an AXP CPU.

I agree with the people above who have suggested the power supply may be the culprit.

I also experienced this problem once with a geforce 2 card that I installed when I was building an Athlon rig. The card had worked fine in my PII, but I ended up taking it out and replacing it with an ATI Radeon 8500 and the Athlon rig worked flawlessly after that. Put the geforce 2 into a PIII machine and it works fine there, so....

So maybe check the video card too.

I had the same problem with the same board and Athlon XP 1800+, WinXP Pro, 512 Corsairs 2700 Ram. I never could figure it out. I replaced the powersupply with a 400W one and that wasn't it. Replaced HD (not to try to fix it, but as a result of something else) and that wasn't it. I finally replaced the motherboard and that seems to have fixed it. I think the MSI Mobos just aren't that great...

The easiest thing to do is what someone suggested earlier in this thread and update your BIOS.

updated the bios from 5.60 to 5.60 (the live updater program said mine was apparently out of date), and it seems to be running stabler. No reboots in the past 48 hours, but the system has also had little use. Maybe it fixed it for some odd reason, but technically the bios was the same version. wierd

seqiro -- I think you're right about the GeForce 2 problem...

I have an ASUS GF2 64MB GTS and when I run Warcraft (mostly) or sometimes open a webpage, I'll get a reboot or a blue screen - IN WINDOWS 2000! "UNHANDLED EXCEPTION ERROR" or something to that extent. I'm hoping that a 9700 Pro might fix my computer
