    Women's Rights

I have to write an essay for english regarding woman's rights. basically, we have been reading older pieces of work in whihc owmen describe how inhibited their lives were. We have two choices. I am likely going to do the one about why so many women have semi-rebelled in today's world (i.e. J. Lo or Britney Spears being scandalous). The other choice is to detail one event that changed the way women were perceived or perceived themselves (or changed the world for women in any major way). I was thinkin perhaps the invent of Barbie because it gave women an unrealistic perception of how they should be. Any other ideas?

    THANKS!

i wouldn't equate being scandalous with womens rights.

how bout birth control pills. women were no longer at the mercy of their "clock". women became more in control of if and when they wanted a family. it allowed them the chance to have a career without the worry of an unplanned pregnancy.

about J. Ho or Titney Spears: sex $ells {nothing new about that for sure)

Write how feminism started off with good intentions and accomplished positive things, but over the recent decades has taken a turn for the worse and this society has seen its unfortunate results. Continue with how contemporary feminism has not adjusted to the times and no longer represents most present-day women. Show how contemporary feminism is pushed by unattractive, bitter extremists who look for any trivial reason to get their name in the news like Augusta and push their radical agenda. Provide examples like how stay at home moms are put down and considered disloyal to the sisterhood by militants. And conclude that it is hurting the American family and relations between the sexes.

How about WWII and the mass introduction of women into the wartime labor force and its impact on the roles of woman in our society, as well as its ties to the roots of the feminist movement.

Also quote from one of the most eloquent [[cough]] feminists of our age, Gloria Steinem, who stated: "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle".
Here was a woman who was constantly changing her agenda and always bragging about her independence, yet ended up in her early sixties marrying someone. That guy has to be either suicidal or the town drunk by now.

well, i don't think the point is to EQUATE being scandalous with women's rights... it sounds like the point is more to explore the causes of that particular reaction to previous oppression and increasing fairness.

the barbie idea is kind of fun, but it would be tough to keep it narrow... i guess the only thing you would have to be careful of is to realize that it is a SYMBOL of problems, and not really a CAUSE of problems. and it would be a very unbalanced paper if you did not explore the fact that there are millions of girls who simply love barbie, period, and there are legitimate (if uncomfortable and un-pc) reasons for it ... "little girls are expected to be like barbie" is not the major reason why most girls who like barbies like them...
