    Fast WINS/NT Question

    Hello everyone!

Fast question regarding WINS registration on an NT 4 Server sp6. If I have a machine that I connect to a new network, and run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew, will that machine register itself with WINS? Or must I restart the machine for this to occur?

I would appreciate specific examples, or text to support this, if you could. Thank you very much for your help!

All you are doing I believe is releasing and then renewing your DHCP info for the PC you are running this on. This really doesn't impact what a WINS server does. WINS means Windows Internet Naming Service and is used to route WIN NT4 server TCP/IP requests across different IP schemes as Win NT4 TCP/IP is not routable protocol. If you have a server with 192.168.1.1 and it has to go over a router to a PC with 192.168.10.20 it will not be able to unless you have a WINS server.

    Hope this helps.

I think you actually have to log onto the network to get registered, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Here's a white paper that may help (I was too lazy to read it all)
