Hewitt to sell Diana love letters

LOS ANGELES, California -- James Hewitt says he is prepared to sell love letters written by his former lover Diana, Princess of Wales.

Hewitt: "An awful lot of good can be done with the money." :sure:

The former British army officer said in an hour-long interview with CNN's Larry King broadcast Wednesday that most people in his situation would do the same thing.

Hewitt is reported to have already been offered $6.4 million for 10 of the 64 letters composed during his affair with Diana, who at the time was married to the heir to the British throne, Prince Charles. The couple divorced in August 1996.

"I'm not being hypocritical about this, I'm being honest," he said.

Hewitt, 44, had previously said he would "never dream" of selling Diana's hand-written love letters.

The princess confirmed the relationship with Hewitt in a sensational television interview on British television in 1995 in which she said of him: "Yes, I adored him. Yes I was in love with him. But I was very let down."

"Yes, I was interested when someone offered me a large sum of money," Hewitt said in answer to questions from King.

"And you would be interested if you got an offer tomorrow?" King continued. "Yes, I would be," Hewitt replied.

Hewitt told CNN's King that ideally the intimate correspondence, written between 1989 and 1991, would go to a private collector or a museum.

"I think it's important to understand that they are or will become important historical documents."

And he said selling the letters was better than leaving them to sit and "rot in a safe."

"I think it might be irresponsible not to sell them and to generate something one can do some good with." When asked if he would use it to "do a lot of good," he replied that he would.

The Gulf War veteran also brushed aside suggestions that he should donate the letters to the British Museum or to Diana's sons, Princes William and Harry.

He insisted the letters were not salacious. "They are extremely well written, loving and nothing to be ashamed of."

Hewitt's plans to cash in on the letters first emerged in a British tabloid newspaper sting last month where he agreed to sell them for up to $16 million to an undercover reporter posing as a Swiss tycoon.

Hewitt said he started the affair with Diana when he was the princess's riding instructor.

...and he's an A** ...Those letters should have and still should be private...only goes to show you how much he loved her...dead or alive...those letters weren't written for public usage...
You would think having them, the memories of her...her last words would be kept private...
If I were her, I'd haunt that SOB till he croaked from fright...
No amount of money would ever make me give private letters written to me from someone I loved...even more so if they died...
He's one of those men that carry the "stupid gene" for sure.

I watched that last night-did you watch it or just read the link?-my opinion on this guy is kinda iffy-one moment he was somber-the next he was sarcastic..someone called in and asked him why he didn't do the right thing and turn the letters over to William and Harry and he said that he would never do that-because they were HIS PRIVATE PROPERTY..what a joke. Personally I think he fathered Harry-they look exactly alike. Either or-he'll never be accepted back into that society like he was before-he said he would be moving out of England soon..I think the word for it is being DRIVEN out of England. He also said he could still be called up for active duty-I bet he meets up with a 25 cent slug right between the eyes.

I only read the link...I wish I had seen the program...anything with Diana interests me...I think that poor woman carried so much weight on her shoulders...as sad as it may sound..death is probably the only peace she would ever have...I just wish she had made better choices in men...this one here looks like a slimeball...
    Maybe he needs a candybar

One thing I don't get... he was boinking a married woman and it's this that makes you guys think he's a slimeball?

Not at all...remember...she was married too, and I would never put her in the slimeball category because she boinked while she was married... He's a slimeball simply because he kissed and told...he opened publicly, things that should have been very private...that is a slimeball in my eyes...well, part of what makes you one...
When someone dates/loves/trusts you/boinks you ...there has to be some bit of loyalty there...and if you can't even hold onto the loyalty after someone you supposedly loved or loved you, dies, then you are a S L I M E B A L L ( all caps for effect )...besides..he was a dog anyhow...yuck...would you date him?

Well... no I wouldn't date him, but that's just the way I swing. As for my opinion of him, yes he is a slimeball. However, I thought that he was a slimeball way before this. IMO, boinking a married woman makes both of them slimeballs. Don't get me wrong, I think that Princess Diana has done a LOT of really good things in her life. However, I don't think her affair with him is one of them. JMO.
