    Random question...

Say, in a hypothetical situation, that you live in a small apartment (bedroom, bathroom, kitchem, small living room). Say that you also didn't go outside for 2-3 days because it was soooo freaking cold. Thus, you didn't open the door or any windows.

Is it possible to use up all the oxygen in the room and suffocate? I figure even if the place isn't airtight, there wouldn't be enough oxygen leaking in to compensate...

I took a brief HVAC (Heating ventilation and air conditioning) instructional course, one of the instructors stated that the pressures outside you home or apartment are greater than the pressures inside so you will always get a positive flow of air into your home or apartment. Unless the damn thing is sealed up like tup aware then you better buy lots of plants.

yeh, there are tons of places for air to leak in not visible to the naked eye.

Yep. I think it takes around 3 straight days for one perosn to suffocate in his or her own car, if there was very little oxygen flowing in, so a house would be different.

You could do a back of the envolope calculation.

First take an estimate of the volume of the room. Then you know at atmospheric pressure there 2.46x10^19 molecules per cubic centimeter. Then based on the knowing that about 20% of that is oxygen you can calculate the amount of oxygen in the apartment.

Next you can calculate estimate the volume of each breath. Then estimate the number of times you breath in a day.

If you want to be even more accurate I think that you only convert a fraction of the amount of the oxygen in each breath to CO2.

You will also need to take in flow and out flow of air into consideration, but I would think that would be negliable.

Now if you have plants that will screw every thing up.

Hypothetical my a$$. You have no idea how cold it has been around here lately! My apt=1 bedroom (sorry ladies, you'll have to take a number )and the windows are closed. Damn, if I suddenly go AWOL I guess you'll all know why. Now excuse me while I go and tell my plants what wonderful creatures they are.

you would also have to account for the uneven consumption of oxygen. it won't hang out in pockets, but rather be dispersed.

also with he sealing of the apt, that would mean the bathroom would provide many hours of entertainment...er...torture...as fumes would permeate said apt.
