    Tip or Not

If you call in a food order and go to pick it up at the restaurant, should you leave a tip?

I say NO, as no service was rendered to you beyond the actual preparation/packaging of the food. No waiter/waitress making $2.13/hr touched your food, brought you drinks or removed empty plates.

Unless you are feeling kind and generous at the time, then a tip would be very welcome.

Only if they throw in a freebie of some sort. That's sort of a "thank you" on their part, so I'll respond in kind.

I'm not a large tipper, 'cept at my bar. They are paid to serve me. If i only see the fuqqer two times, they get 1 dollar, if my g/f can get that out of me.

    example:
Last week PG and I went to acapulco(local restrant chain of "mexican" food) We get seated, and the manager says, "hi my name is <insert name>, your waitress is <insert name>, and is a little busy is there anything i can get you?"
"waters, and can we order, we know what we want" - us
    "sure"
    takes our order.
    we eat
we stay for over an hour (20 minutes waiting for the check)
our waitress brought our check, and it was the first time we saw her.

and then she gave me a pissed off look when I didn't leave a tip.

She's lucky i didn't stick a penny in a glass of water, put a napkin on top, flip it over, and leave it for her

(hey, we actually go to that one fairly often)

Don't generally tip for take-out but I am usually generous if we're sitting down. If you don't spill anything on us or curse us you'll probably get 20%. Exceptional service may get you a bit more.

This discussion reminds me of the opening scene in the Diner from "Reservoir Dogs."

like faither said, i tip well when i'm at a sit-down restaurant. i actually tend to tip in the 25% range if i'm at a decent restaurant for dinner, because i don't order alcohol. i know that tends to boost the wait-staffs' tips substantially, and i feel bad when they get stuck with me and i'm ordering the $13 vegetarian entree.

but i ABSOLUTELY hate it when i go into a sandwich joint or the like and at the cash register is a jar that says "TIPS!! THANKS!!". pisses me off. if your cooks and cashiers are underpaid, then freaking raise your prices. don't put your cute little tip jar there and then give me dirty looks if i don't put anything in it.

Last time I had take out, I didn't tip...actually I never thought to tip for takeout....
Though when I sit and eat in a restaurant, I tip pretty good...and if the waitress is rude, and finds it a chore to come back to see if we need anything or if everything is peachy, her tip isn't as good...
My 16 yr old daughter buys slurpies in food court and I was with her
when she did a few weeks ago, and as soon as she was given her change, she put it in the "tip" cup on the counter...which surprised me for two reasons...one that there was a "tip cup" and two, that she actually thought to tip.

    Sure I'll be quiet when...

I don't tip for take out if I picked it up but of course I do if it is delivered. I do however tip close to 20% when served.

if i'm in a good mood, i'll tip if there's a tip cup (always)

if it's a place i go to frequently, i'll tip if there's a tip cup on a rotation basis...say, 1 out of 4 times. the amount varies with whatever it is i get usually and how long it takes to prepare.

    if it's burger king, no.

if it's a mexican restaurant, then i do if i know the food is good. same if it's a local pizza place.

    You said it.

Perhaps one of my biggest pet peeves of all time.

At the coffee shop, the tip cup.

"Thanks for, um, filling my cup with coffee... here's a little something extra."

    I don't think so.

I do tip well at restaurants when the service is excellent. Though, I have no bones about tipping very little if the service sucks. That's the gig, folks... service. That's what the tip is for.

I also have no problem tipping less than 15% if the service is awful, but the food is really expensive. That really upsets me. Expensive food... bad service.

You don't get any default love from me. I would expect the same, if I was a server.

We tip between 15-20% most of the time if the service is good. More toward 20% if we have Josh with us, more toward 15% if he isn't, unless the service is excellent.

If the service is bad, I don't leave a tip. Occasionally, we'll get a waitress that we have always had great service from before and she is having an off night or whatever, then we'll tip. But if constantly get bad service or not so great service, **** the tip. Like you said, tipping is for GOOD SERVICE.

I wouldn't tip for a take-out order. As someone mentioned, the tip reflects how well the service was provided. I do tip over 20% if they sing a song or bring up some birthday cake or something. No tip will be given if we are ignored for a long period of time and I have to get the forks and knives myself.

I do not tip on a pick up order - then again I very seldom place an order to go.

I don't like cold food that's suppose to be hot.

Generally no. If I have a difficult order that requires more attention than usual (and they manage to get it right), I'll leave a few bucks.

From what my waitress friend tells me, you should never EVER order any shrimp dishes at Acapulco or El Torito ... and possibly any other restaurant. While they're waiting around for the rest of your order to show up, the servers/waiters munch on your shrimp.

el torito is ok. there's that, acapulco, tio leo's...very similar. but if you're going for shrimp, it's gotta be rockin baja lobster (or bubba gump shrimp co, but that's outside of the mexican theme)

I usually tip 2 times the tax. roughtly about 16.5% for dinner, 10% for lunch.
I deduct a dollar for every instance that they make me way too long for something. Heehee.
