    do you stare at people...

    that look different?

No, I am not talking about people with disabilities or that were born handicapped...

I am talking about the people that dye their hair different colors and have alot of piercings....

I am asking because I went to 2 different store today and I was dressed incrediably "normal" and people kept staring at me, and I didn't know why, then I remembered that I have semi-pink hair...why is it that people act like they have NEVER seen something like that??

Nah - just a glance. If I find their appearance funny, I'll still just glance, but laugh my @ss off when they're out of earshot...

I don't stare at anyone. I get stared at constantly, especially when I change the stud in my lip to a ring. For some reason people have a problem with people who don't dress out of a ambercrombie n bitch catloge or the likes... ::shudder::

Maybe they haven't. I mean a person with pink hair is not that common in life. Neither is a guy with a lip ring. If half the people in the world had that, then no one would care. But it's something that it's uncommon, so people take interest in it.

I mean, why do people always slow down and watch a car accident? Because, it's not very common (at least not to witness one) and people are generally curious.

It's not a bad thing. However, if they start to do this: then maybe they don't approve of it. But otherwise, I think it's a healthy curiosity.

Speaking of which, can I see your pink hair Pinkgirl?

True true. I'm currently in DC so I guess that makes sense.

But I wasn't speaking about myself...maybe about society in general.

I went to the most liberal school you could find, so I saw tons of strange colored hair, tattoos, and body piercings and I'm very used to it.

Actually, my hair was once purple...not all of it, just the front-right part of it.

I did like it that color too...but the color kept coming out...and after a while it was brown

See, I wouldn't expect most people to accept it, because of values and whatever (somehow people bring morality into it, but it really doesn't belong, same with values, different thread tho). It's not like they haven't ever seen it before, and if they haven't they are already so removed from society, that was the first time they had ever been outside, in say 20 years.

I accept that people are going to glance at me, sometimes. But when their jaw drops to the ground, I think that's when I (and probably PG36, although I won't speak for her) draw the line. Take a glance, like you would any other person on the street, and keep moving. Personally, if someone is staring at me, I have no problem staring back at them, maybe even a rude gesture if i'm in a good mood.

Depends....If the person is acting like an idiot...or humping a pole where I go dancing...or half nekey...yes, you bet I'll stare...
I try not to stare to make someone uncomfortable if they're just being their own person and not dressed "normal" for lack of a better word...I'll look quick..if I really have the need to get a longer look...I'll make sure they aren't looking
Pink hair, green hair, purple hair...its all pretty normal to me there's so much of the color out there...so they don't get second looks from me unless its someone like my grandmother...then I'd stare...
Piercings the same way...unless you have a toggle bolt hanging off your lip...
If you stand out like a neon sign that screams "look at me" ..you bet your fanny I stare...

I've also been known to stare if someones really pretty or handsome...so its not always staring for something bad...
Denial isn't a river in Egypt.....

    Sure I'll be quiet when...

I only stare at chest crack I'm kidding. Sometimes I do depending how the degree of abnormality/uncommoness. Like if I see a tongue ring...no big deal. A nose ring like you see on a bull that will take a lil more time to process. Tattoos are common like the barb wire sort of chinese/kanji character and that take about a quick glance unless unusaully large. Colored hair isn't so bad but bright anime pink deserves a double take. It's like wearing a bright orange jump suit. You don't actually blend in with the surrounding. So it's not staring in a demeaning way but more of an eye-catcher or eye-candy.

yeah, sometimes ppl want ppl to stare so they can make an issue of it. it's kinda odd. it's like "look at me!" with the follow-up of "wtf you lookin at?" personally i've prolly seen it so i often don't gaf.

but yeah, sometimes if it's something interesting i'd be all "i wonder if i could pull that off?" or something

If you choose to dress in such a way that calls attention to yourself (i.e. hair color that no human being naturally has, or holes in the front part of your face) than expect to be stared at. I stare all the time. Sometimes I'll even laugh.

Yes, everyone should look exactly the same, and not have any hint of origniality. Let's all wear the same type of clothing, and have the same hair color and style, that's the answer!

You wait until they're out of earshot? Maybe that is why I get into so many altercations. You'd be surprised to learn how easy it is to make some tough-looking jerk threaten to punch you, but how difficult it is to actually convince that person to fight. The only time in recent history that someone actually came through on their threat (BlueTorch does NOT count), I was in line at Mountain High and some guy waited until I looked over at my girlfriend to make sure she was safe and out of the way...and then he punched me right into (and on top of) some little kid (it is easy to be knocked backward in snowboarding boots). What was weird was that the aggression started because he was staring at me, so I asked "What? Do you think I'm cute or something?" which is why he started getting all pissed. After getting back up, I turned around and started helping the kid and asking if he was okay, but when I turned back to the guy, he thought everything was over and was laughing to his friends...I grabbed him by the hair, slammed his head into the wooden wall behind him (not as violently as that word would imply) and said "I won't fight you here. I won't fight you now. But if I see you on the slopes, I will f***ing gut you." The guy was so surprised that I made any threatening moves...that he just stood there staring in disbelief as I turned around and bought my ticket and a ticket for the little 5 year-old that I had nearly crushed. (The ticket window lady gave me the kid's ticket for free because I was trying to be altruistic and she gave me a big season-long discount for any tickets I purchased). Unfortunately for the rest of the day, the only time I saw the guy was when I was repairing my binding and the bastard walked behind me and whipped me across the back with his metal lift-ticket necklace and immediately walked away. I had to stay calm that time because my girlfriend was there and getting concerned that I would kill or be killed. This was...around December 27th. I still hope the prick dies.

And for clarification, I die my hair occasionally and wear weird T-shirts. I ride both sides of the line. If you die your hair or pierce normal things, no problem. That's cool. If you look like a freak...I'll point and laugh.

PS - Have you ever seen anyone with a pierced tooth? I have...so I pointed and laughed...

Sometimes I stare, but mostly just to anoy people.
What's really fun is find a corperate clone and stare at him like he has a 2 foot neon spiked mowhawk, is dressed in leather and had 40+ piercings.

No bonehead, that's not the answer. Go ahead and express yourself. But expect certain expressions to attract funny looks. Make your choice and accept the consequesces. And right back at cha.

if you dyed your hair pink, you're only asking for attention.

same thing with lots of body piercings or tatoos.

what i dont understand, is someone who does this, and then doesnt understand why they're getting stared at. Us "slightly more normal" people think "ya'll" are craving attention or something, so we feel just fine stareing.

BTW, i check out chicks asses too, but discreetly. I never want to let them or one of their friends catch me doing it.

If you had pink hair, I'd probably look, but not stare like I would have if it were 1982 or something.

If you have a lip ring, I'll probably stare a bit. Not because I'm freaked out, but because I'm just wondering if it's uncomfortable, or if it gets in the way.

If you have a really big tatoo, I'll probably stare even longer because I'm studying the artwork and design.

It all has to do with the "processing time". Things that are new or complex require more time to process. I've even been known to go up to someone and ask about their particular "adornment".

Now what really bugs me is if a woman has a tatoo on her chest. I mean, I want to see it, but I know it's not polite. So my mind kind of gets stuck in an endless loop, and I have to reboot.

I always felt I was mostly normal in appearence until last thursday. I wear fairly standard tshirt and khakis and I spike my hair messy. I see tons of people exactly like that everyday on campus so I didn't think anything of it.

Then I went with my friend to his non-denominational church thing. They did weird stuff but thats another story. Anyway, when the "service" was over we talked with all the people there and they all made some "trying-to-be-funny-but-obviously-nervous" comment about my hair. I wouldnt think much of it except at least 10 people mentioned it in the course of 15 minutes. It was enough to convince me never to go back there.

Also a huge difference between age and type of person. In other words, an older conservative person is going to stare a ton more than a college student. Of course, in 40 years the college students will be those older conservative people that are doing the staring...

Well, you can come to my church. Our pastor has a spikey messey hair thing going. Although you'd probably get a few stares if you wore a coat and tie...
