Question Using cell phone as laptop modem?

I am getting ready to order a new cell phone for work, and I was curious if I would be able to just dial in to my University like I would if I were using a regular modem. The phone that I am going to get is capable of being used as a modem, but I am not sure if it is some special protocol that the receiving end must be capable of using.

Any thoughts? By the way the phone I am getting is the Motorola t720.

    Thanks!

not sure if it would be worth the extra for the cable to connect to your laptop i think you can only get about 8 or 9 k using a cell modem less than 14.4K connection so you would feel like you where crawling imho and i could be wrong about speeed because alot has to do with your provider. if you have cingular i think it is 8 or 9. if you are in japan or china i would say it would be alot faster cause they have a differnt phone network set up

Is it through bluetooth? If so, you might need a usb adapter.

No it is through a USB cable. I have actually tried dialing up to an AOL phone number with someone else's account, but it would not connect me even though the phone said I was getting about 14.4kb/s. This is why I am suspecting that it is a different protocol than v.90 or v.92.

    Thanks for your help fellas.

Usually you have to get special data service from your wireless provider. By default your phone won't send data.

I know it's this way with Nextel at least.
