Thread: Photoshop: Out of memory

    Question Photoshop: Out of memory

My co-worker is having problems with her computer at home. She's has a PC running at 1.6Ghz, 768 DDR megs of ram a Soyo mobo, and Win ME. I dunno what her video card is but she can play Unreal 2003 without a problem.

Whenever she works with Coldfusion or Photoshop, the program throws up an error saying she's running out of memory or there's not enough memory. In PS after she brings up like 3 or 4 images it gives the error and closes out.

    Any suggestions?

Have her download, install and run Spybot and Ad-Aware. Perhaps she has some background registry/system/spyware/crap that is running without her knowing. Also have her run all the windows updates.

I would HIGHLY SUGGEST upgrading to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Windows ME in general is a guaranteed piece of s***

Not sure if this is the solution, but you can increase the "Memory Usage" which limits the amount of RAM available to the program. It is under "Preferences" in the "Edit" menu. Set the percentage to a higher amount. Not sure about Coldfusion, but you should definitely get rid of ME, it is garbage.

Its Windows ME. I had teh same problem. I had 768 megs of ram in my old computer and after about two hours of usage it would be at 767 megs in use. ME has a memory hole and is awful at memory management. I suggest she upgrades to 2k or XP asap.

Yes, move on to Windows XP. WinME is garbage and the most likely culprit.

WinXP or Win2K would be better. Even Win98SE is better than the sorry WinME.

I have a copy of DOS with better mem management if you need it.

I will vote with everyone else here. The main issue is more then likely ME. ME is full of memory leaks and bugs, even when fully patched and updated from windows update. If she wants to stick with a 9x product, install Win98 or upgrade to 2000 or XP.

One thing to check on is the amount of free disk space. It could be that the system is trying to use swap space (virtual memory) and doesn't have enough free disk space.
