USB pen drives

friend of mine recently got a laptop without a floppy drive, so he was thinking about just getting one of them USB drives to transport little files like word documents and the like.

any advice/warnings/praises on this device? i've never had any experience with them, so i was a bit curious myself.

and (at the risk of having this moved into the got|deals forum) if they're worth getting, could any recommend a good place to get them?

what os does your friend use on both PC's most of those if you have XP you dont need any drivers but if you have 98 or 95 it will require drivers and none that i know of will work with dos so you could not make one a bood disk

check out www.tigerdirect.com for good deals. The PNY they had had a rebate..the 128MB ended up being $35 shipped.

Also, get the biggest one you can afford. I LOVE mine, and use it all the time. Unfortunately, it's only 64MB, so I need to replace it with a larger one.

My girlie got me one of the Creative Nomad Muvo MP3 players, which stores data on a USB stick. It's 128 MB, so I can store at least 2 full albums of good quality and some other documents etc. Very cool.

I got a 64MB USB pen drive from Fry's for $14.99. I could have waited and gotten it for cheaper..

I got one when they were very new. Got a 16Mb one for like $50...yes...it was back then.

I find them to be great, as long as you get one that's a good size. They're automatically detected on Win2K and XP and with 98 I believe mine came with a driver disk that you had to load before running.

The MuVo is pretty neat. It's both a MP3 player and a flash hard drive. It's a tad pricey for the size, but it's worth it if you're into such things. Try newegg.com as they have good prices. I tend to avoid tigerdirect for its past sketchiness, but that's just me.

If you need larger drives (512Mb sticks are very expensive), you can consider a portable hard drives like this:

yeah he's running win xp, and someone showed him the tigerdirect deals, but the most recent rebate ended o march 31st! JUST missed it...

I just bought a Lexar 256 Jumpdrive USB2.0 from CompUSA for like 70 bucks plus tax and after rebate. Works very well. I believe another site (amazon?) or Microcenter is selling it for 80 after rebate. the rebate is 20 bucks off but I notice the websites use the same rebate and either add or photoshop their logo on to it.

I second checking out newegg.com. My dad travels constantly and wanted me to get him one of those and he uses that thing for everything.

Just remember to use the "safely remove hardware" option from the taskbar because I have seen him lose some of the data he was working on when he hurriedly try to transfer data from notebook to desktop. It wasn't a complete wipe of the drive but things that were changed during the session that he should have closed.

WHA?!?! I feel you are being misled by your vendor. If he/she SERIOUSLY feels Win95 to be the most stable, I would look for another vendor.

This does make a lot of sense, I have considered doing exactly this with my CF reader and CF cards. The nifty thing about the pen drives is how small and robust they are. Many are advertised as *keychains*

anyways if you buy a new LC model the only os u can get on get is win 95. the Vgate was just upgraded from Win 3.11 to win 95 just a few mo. ago

we have several of the LC5000 's

if we converted the other system to anyhting above 95 we cant keep our service contract. actualy it will not even work on 98 on the LC5000 system.... well anyways.....
