discussions that lead to argument...on the next "geraldo"...
we pretty much all get suckered into them at one time or another. some more often than others. but i am curious about how most of us feel about them.
are fun, informative, and inspirational. i am so there!
are to be avoided. they're silly, and everyone spouts off like a know-it-all
are funny. i laugh at them more than anything
i don't like them, but i can get suckered in if someone interesting(good or bad) posts

They can be interesting, to a point. Most of the participants are incredibly predictable, though.
i knew you were gonna say that!

While they are not really "fun, informative and inspirational" I do enjoy them. They are what makes a forum a forum. People expressing their ideas and opinions in a public venue.
I am concerned that the only option to say people like them is worded in a manner to discourage people from selecting that option. But that's what happens when an ignorant slut makes a poll...![]()
I've been part of more than my share of these, so I guess I get a kick out of them. Though, I've tried recently to exercize some restraint. Sometimes, it's just so hard.![]()
I sort of look at it like going to a car race hoping to see a huge pile-up. It's entertainment mixed with a tinge of disappointment when there isn't a wreck.![]()
while i see your point and hear your concern, i'm not so sure it was worded in such a manner. perhaps it was worded tongue-in-cheek in a way that might discourage it, but your wording implies that my wording had an agenda of the sort.Originally posted by Grimm

that said, in my defense i gotta say that i haven't seen a whole lot of 100% perfect polls. and it's not really imbalanced. but you can take this as an opportunity for your own poll poll to see if this poll is a fair one or not![]()

For me its a mental exercise. Where else do you get to discuss issues with people from such varied backgrounds and locations?
Well trying to convince the other person of something is kind of the whole point of a debate/discussion. I don't mind it as long as...Originally posted by DarkFury
Yeah... discussion is one thing, it's when folks try to convince each other that they are right and others are wrong as to when problems occur...
(and no, I'm not talkin' directly about you here Canta... just to the issues in general)
1)It remains civil and respectful. There is a place for fun and games but in a serious discussion act accordingly. Canta has been pretty civil with me but does get baited into the name calling fairly easily.
2) The discussion progresses. Make a point and explore it. Then explore the counterpoint. To simply state positions over and over again does very little. That's why I avoid religous topics as there is no discussion but rather the repetitive statement of dogma
If the discussion does stagnate just do what I like to do...Declare victory and move on.![]()
Ha! I rule! (see how easy it is)
:monkey:
And before people go pointing fingers, just remember for every Canta diatribe, there's gotta be an xsiled, or Jenny, or Prominx, or JohnnyMk, etc. provoking him. It takes at least two to ruin a thread.
Common sense is what tells you the Earth is flat.
This is not about Canta but who's provoking whom surely depends on your perspective.
Also, I think we've all seen plenty of examples where a lone gunman (not THE TLG) has highjacked or ruined a thread. It doesn't always take two to do the damage.
With exception to the posting of very inappropriate graphics, any inflammatory post can easily be ignored without taking a thread down. You might roll your eyes as you pass over it, but unless there are two people pissed at each other, it generally stops at that.Originally posted by faither

Yeah I get a kick out of selling Fleet's enema kits to dirty old men. <shuddering> Bad memories from my retail days.
No you ignant slut, from long argumentative threads!
I disagree with merlin. They should not be about convincing other people. Some of us are too committed to our views to be logical so the argument goes on forever. The best way is to argue about it for a few pages and then the key is getting everyone to understand eachother's points. If we understand eachother and can agree to disagree, we are much better off than arguing forever. The first few pages are to persuade those open minded people (like me. Just don't tell me PMS exists :-p)
A good example of this running well is that thread where Canta pointed out the faults of the founding fathers. (I can't think of the thread title)

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals.
