Upgrading Win98 >>> WinXP

Do I upgrade or do a fresh install?

Fresh install. Win98 and WinXP are very different. You DO NOT want old Win98 (16bit) drivers and dlls lying around butting in on your 32 bit-WinXP tasks.

Seconded. My old computer started as 98 then went to ME, then 2000 then XP. No formats in between. It was running really sketchy. Then I formatted and did a fresh XP install and it ran smooth.

you can do teh upgrade only if you tell it to replace your current windows dont let it leave all the old windows crap in there. Fresh install is best

Ok, got it fresh install on a shiny new hard drive comming up.

(A Seagate btw... no crappy Deathstars for me)

Uh huh! Nothing more satisfying than blowing away a machine that's been through upgrade hell (3 or more OS upgrades in a row) EEEK!

Over the weekend we did the same thing for my Grandpa's computer. He couldn't believe how much faster his computer ran. One thing that turned out weird was that we took his old hard drive and placed into the slave postion and installed a new 80gig 7200 8mb buffer drive in the master position. When XP was installed, it made the new drive D: (where xp is installed) and the old drive C: (where 98 is still installed until we get old data off the drive). Is there anyway to switch the drive letters and still have the computer boot correctly?

Is the version you have the full version or an upgrade only. I went through this at work. Also if your drive is partitioned and your doing an upgrade it tries to install it on a drive other than your primary partition, you need to correct the drive letter to the primary partition.
