Considering you're driving up Highway 101/1 (PCH) during the beginning of summer travel, traveling "cheap" could be a problem.

I typically leave as early as possible, and get to Santa Barbara in the afternoon. Chill out around town, have a decent dinner. Day 2, if you're not in any big hurry, continue driving north and visit Hearst's Castle. You could probably stay another night in Big Sur and hike around the hills there. Then on day 3 i guess go all the way to SF. Maybe stop in Gilroy and embrace the smell of garlic

Ah yes, Gilroy's garlic. I remember stepping outta my house and getting good wiff of it before going off to band practice at 7 in the morning. Pretty amazing how far you can smell that considering I was in Cupertino.

You won't regret it trust me! We have so much stuff here, Rite Aid, Vons, ..., mcdonalds. So much fun so little time! I hear the local Carl's Jr. got new windows, should be exciting.
