I signed up for Phone Free about three weeks ago and it's been working great, with just the occasional very brief dropout. Sound quality is at least as good as cellular. Most people can't tell I'm not using a regular telephone until I tell them. Free download, free calls. A friend in NY uses it with the built-in mic and speakers on his laptop, and it works just fine. We both have DSL, so I'm not sure how well dial-up would work. Highly recommended. www.phonefree.com

How does it compare to dialpad? Being in the UK, its a great option, since I can call the US for "free" but the quality leaves a little to be desired.
Anybody tried out both?

I'm not familiar with Dialpad, but I've used Net2Phone and its sound quality pales in comparison with PhoneFree. Also, I should add that international calls are not free with PhoneFree. And, no, I don't work for them.

I expected a bigger response to this. Considering that long distance bills are typically $40-$70, saving that much each month means $480-$840 a year. Think of the hardware that would buy...... Oh, well.

I signed up and installed the software but every time I try to run it its says it generated errors and shuts right down. I'm running win2k pro is that a problem does anyone know?

Are you in the Admin list on your Windows 2k box? Some software will only install correctly if done by an Admin.

Yes I am under the admin acct, it won't run at all, I called them and the guy was completely confused, just kept asking me to repeat the story like it is so complicated or something. Finally he said uninstall and reinstall which did absolutely nothing.

DUDE! guys, just use www.ureach.com
its a very nice service, I just signed up a week ago... ya so they only give you 30 min a month, but hey, you use a phone to call another phone, and if you want you can get an 800 number... its good for road trips... I guess... I haven't seem any ad banners for this company yet....
P.S. oh , ya, if you get the 800 # 5 of your minutes goes bye-bye everytime you use the 800 number.... basically 6 calls placed by an 800 #
FYI, I work with toilets, not phone companies
(im not advertising... =P )

Freeway (http://www.broadpoint.com) gives 2 hours of long distance for free. every 15 second ad you listen to, 2 free minutes. And you can even user it from a pay phone since you call a toll-free number

This site above has a listing of quite a few cheap and free longdistance alternatives.
I use dialpad.com and bigzoo.com myself. Bigzoo can be really busy, but is phone to phone and via 888 number. give the site a try as you might find something that fits you.

Kingink, thanks I'll check that site out, I use bigzoo already, super cheap, dialpad is kind of echo'ish for me even on a headset and sdsl line, tried a few different ones, but nortelnetworks currently has one too that works over a regular phone but I don't have the url with me right now.
