Burnitz, Henderson headed to LA

LOS ANGELES -- Searching for a way to improve the lowest-scoring offense in the National League, the Dodgers on Monday acquired outfielder Jeromy Burnitz from the New York Mets in exchange for three minor leaguers and they signed 44-year-old future Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson out of an independent league.

Henderson, baseball's all-time leader in runs scored, stolen bases and walks but unable to land a Major League job this year, was hitting .339 with a .493 on-base percentage and a .591 slugging percentage for the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League. This will be the 10-time All-Star's ninth team and 25th Major-League season.

He is generally regarded as the best leadoff hitter in history, combining the speed and base-running savvy to steal 1,403 bases with the power to hit 295 home runs.

Go Rickey! I am very glad to hear that Rickey is coming back for one more dance in the sun. Although Rickey will probably want to come back next year, I think that Rickey Henderson is a testament of what hard work and persistance can do for you. That with a buttload of natural talent and strength.

A lot of 44 year olds would have retired instead of being sent down. I have great respect for Rickey's persistance. I hope that he does more great things as Dodger. The Dodgers are in desperate need of a hitter.

The problem being that he'll be a bench player. I understand that bench players are important, but don't you want to end your career on a high note? I think Mark McGwire did, which coincidentally I think was a bit premature because he still should have a few years left in him. But as for Ricky, its been downhill for over 5 years already.

Halleluiah ! Rickey is back. Rickey has always been one of my favorite players and I'm glad to see him still in the game. He obviously has all the money he'll ever need but just wants to keep playing. God bless him for that. And yes, he'll probably keep playing until someone chases him down and rips the jersey right off his back.

As for his talent. No, he can't come cose to performing at the levels he once did, however, he still knows how to get on base. And while he may not be what you would call a "team player" he does have the tendency to demonstrate to his teammates the virtues of plate discipline and the value of taking the walk. He'll help the Dodgers.

yeah, he's definitely a hard worker...and always wants to be in the action. he'll be fine as long as you keep the deck of cards away from him.

if the sorry-ass Dodgers are basing their hopes for turning the season around on an old man and Jeromy Burnitz with all of his .274 avg and 55 Ks, they are on crack. as a Giants fan I am happy to see this. it will make it that much sweeter when we kick the crap outta them.

As for Cant's comments about the 80's and the A's, I couldn't agree more. They were the dynasty back then. And not to mention Dave Stewart, Dave Parker, and many other great players on those teams.

I'm a die-hard Giants fan. But I don't think the pickup of Burnitz will make it much easier for the Giants. The addition of Rickey is inconsequential, IMO. So long as Burnitz inherits the slumps the rest of the team has! And yeah, it will make it that much more sweeter with them on the team, because now they may have a fighting chance

ROFLMAO. What I'm going to say may sound blashphemous but I like them all. The Angels, Giants, Dodgers, A's and to an extent the Padres. But lately I must say I've been pulling for the Angels. They still seem like the unrespected underdogs.

Rickey Goes Yard

When he made contact, instead of admiring his drive to center field, he put his head down and started running without any of the usual theatrics that were always part of Henderson's game. And despite a standing ovation from the crowd of 43,504, Henderson did not come out of the dugout to take a bow.

"I usually go slower and a little stutter-step, but this time I ran around the bases -- and my teammates got mad at me because I didn't do none of my styling or my tricks that I do around the basepaths when we're leading in the ballgame. I'd rather celebrate when we're winning."

Good job Rickey. If you wanna play till your 50, that's the way you gotta do it
