    questions about shaving (both sexes)...

i have this bad habit of constantly rubbing my face when i've two-day stubble, and after a while it starts to irritate my skin...

then, when i go to finally shave it off, it's a bit painful and leaves me a bit raw.

i use warm water, gilette shaving gel, a sensor excel, and afterwards i use nivea after-shave balm.

maybe the ladies also have suggestions for me, but i'm wondering, aside from the obvious suggestion (stop rubbing my face, which i am trying to do), what is the best way and/or what are the best products to use to keep my face from getting irritated when i shave?

i'm even willing to use feminine products (i don't really care) as long it will help with the stinging, raw feeling my face is left with.

throw some car wax on there after you shave. it will add a protective barrier and make your skin nice and shiny!

uhmm. Do what revil Suggests ... he's usually right... ..

Just go for the No shaving up.. and let the shave not be so close ... You will have to shave again the next day anyhow...

how often do you shave? if you're waiting awhile between shaves, that may actually be making it worse. your skin gets softer and you end up with super-close shaves. which seems like a good thing, but it also gives you a much higher chance of getting irritation, bumps, etc.

i use similar products to what you use, and i used to have a lot of problems with irritation, bumps, ingrown hairs, etc. now, i shave 5-6 days a week and make sure to always keep a sharp blade in the razor. i also try not to shave too close. it's better to have a not-so-close shave if it means you can avoid red bumps.

ya- i shave daily, cept mwf i shave up - t th i shave down
    saves on irritation

if i try to go 2 days in a row up - ew - bad scrapes

i've tried once or twice shaving down - then up right after - that is pretty irritating too - too much scraping on the skin.....

First shave with an electric. Then use a blade to get a close shave.

yeah, i don't shave as often as i should...

i'm too lazy to do it every day, and to tell you the truth, i've always liked a certain amount of facial hair, be it a goatee or sideburns or just grown in stubble... but, you know, a certain someone prefers me to be clean shaven every day, so if shaving more often also helps with the irritation, maybe i should take her advice...

    thanks for the help guys...

The Mach 3 Turbo gives a closer shave so you can (hopefully) go longer between sessions. My guy just switched over from the Sensor Excel, and his skin is sooo much smoother.

you know, i've heard from a significant number of people who have tried both and told me they preferred the sensor excel... that's actually why i bought one in the first place, as opposed to a mach 3. maybe i should try it anyway...

the blades are just so expensive!

I just use the blades until they are COMPLETELY Dull .. if I cut myself twice or more during one shave.. the blade needs to go.. a lot of times I can go 3 weeks to a month before that happens though.. And I shave daily

    Talking shaving

Probably the same areas that you do, but that might just fall under "too much information"

it's not even close. the mach 3 is the best razor i've ever used, hands down.

    MACH 3

Yeah I just turned 18 and I got free Mach 3's from Gilette. One at my current address, one at my old address, and another at my current address for some reason (im not complaining). If you guys will soon be turning 18, or have kids who are turning 18, steal theirs before they see the mail. Comes with razor cream and some coupons.

I also shave with a Mach3.. My skin gets very irritated if I shave with warm water. I just use cold water and I can shave up/down and have no problems. I also had to quit using aftershave and any shaving cream that had any special lotions in it. Kind of funny that shaving cream or aftershave for 'sensitive skin' would irritate the crap out of my skin.

Hey FS - have you ever tried shaving in the shower? I used to hate shaving with a blade because I have sensitive skin. I shaved with an electric for years. I got a free Mach 3 in the mail and decided to try it. Well, for some reason I decided to try it in the shower and I couldn't believe the difference it made.

So I got a shaving mirror (~$8), some Gillette sensitive skin cream, and I shave as the last thing I do in the shower. Something about standing in that humid shower for a few minutes really gets your skin ready for a shave.

From queer eye for the straight guy on bravo:

Shaving is one of the simple things you can do to make it look like you've given some thought to your look. The best time to do so is the morning, after your shower so the warm water will help soften your beard. Pre-shave oil will help soften it even more.

Razor burn can be a real drag, but it's easy to avoid no matter how rough your beard is. Always use a sharp razor with at least two blades and a moveable head.

Start with the sides of your face, and save your lip and neck for last. Those are problem areas for a lot of guys; if we do them last, we give the oil and the shaving cream more time to do their work.

When you shave, you're actually creating your sideburns. You want to make sure they are even, and a great way to check is to take your index finger and put it at the very bottom of your sideburn on both sides, step back and have a look.
