    I'm going to DC

I just thought I'd jump in on the bandwagon. My company will be exhibiting at the Natural Product Expo East in Washington DC from 9/4-9/7. Too bad I won't have any free time to do anything. Those tradeshows make you real tired. I suppose I could use a few good recommendations for dinner. I do have to eat.

You were in Vancouver. You could've gotten plenty of it there.

Cool. You'll be in the new Convention Center? If you are I suggest you stay on the south side walking towards the monuments. One block south is safe. One block north and well I hope they have a body bag in your size. Don't go west or east until you first go 2-3 blocks south otherwise you'll end up in a not so picturesque part of town.

Near Chinatown we have a Subway and a Blimpies. We also have a Hooters, Ruby Tuesday, Fuddruckers, Starbucks and Legal Seafoods in the perpendicular street. The waitresses at Hooters aren't really that good from what I've heard but you can check it out yourself

Yes, it's at the new Washington DC convention center.

If there are Legal Seafoods, what are illegal seafoods?

Hop on the blue line of the metro and head for Georgetown. Old Glory has good BBQ. Also in Georgetown is Fatoosh which is pretty good middle eastern food. There is also a good sushi place called Kaz's Sushi Bistro if that is your thing too. It is on 19th and I street. Adams Morgan has a fair number of restaurants, but NW is in the midst of a gang war right now so I probably would not wander over that way.

I think he needs to go 2 south before going west. That first or second blocks west I think is sketchy no? Whatever the case don't go north.

No offense, but I've been to Virginia once. I have no desire to go back. I'm not sure which was more boring... NoVa or Richmond, where I was for most of my trip.

don't go to chinatown.... it's not really chinatown (just look at those restauraunts that mc listed....they're all chinese cuz they have a chinese sign on top). Chinatown is really sad.... unless you have something to watch at the MCI center.... don't go there.

I still haven't done any of the touristy stuff in DC (just been to hockey/basketball games ). but yeah...I heare georgetown is the place to go....

Seems like DC is a dangerous place to be if you don't know the territory. I guess I'll head straight back to the hotel after the show every night. Is the St Regis near the convention center?

Well I didn't list any Chinese restaurants . Yes those restuarants do have their names written up in Chinese because afterall they are in Chinatown and they are one block away from MCI center. Before the MCI Arena they used to be Chinese restaurants until they were bought out or their rents went through the roof when the lease had to be renewed.

Right now they're constructing an office/apt/mall complex on top of the metro station there. Watch out for falling stuff. I took the metro there and I noticed one of the wooden boards/plank collapse from a combo of holding up all the rain water and construction material left over the weekend.

Yeah go to Georgetown...I think you need a cab b/c there no metro there right? And parking is a miracle if you can find one.

dc's chinatown is the most pathetic i've seen in any major city.

as for how safe DC is, i've heard two schools of thought. one group of people names all these "dangerous" and "safe" areas and advises you to stay away from anything that's not the mall, georgetown, or adams morgan.

the other group says that most of the city is relatively safe as long as you're not scared of black people and aren't a complete idiot. i haven't spent enough time in dc to know who's right, but i'd guess it's somewhere between the two extremes. but seriously, i don't think it's that bad. it's not like you're in detroit or something

    I'm going to DC

Like any major city there are wonderful areas and those that one should not set foot into. Use your best judgement. ( wrong place wrong time can happen anywhere )

Georgetown is the place to go to hang out and whatever.

Your hotel is actualy near one of our offices > not too far from the white house. cab it to gtown is my recommendation.

If you take the blue/orange line to the Foggy Bottom stop you will come out by GW. You can walk to M street from the metro. DC really is not all that bad. I am serious about the gang war in NW right now, but that is new and not really the norm for the most part. I have only been through Chinatown twice, I was not that impressed. Since I live only a few miles from DC I should spend more time there, but the bars are expensive and parking sucks.

Yeah I heard about these gang wars. Defintely not the norm for DC so stay away from that area.

Here's a news link to it

I'm hoping the hotel is decent. The St. Regis in LA is pretty nice.

Unless there is a gang for short, white kids with glasses I think I am out of luck. Sadly, my friend bought a house in NW fairly close to all of this stuff. He has a baby due next week so this little development is not welcome.

It's not the Willard but I am sure you will find it more than adequate.

Just got back last night. Glad to be home. Fortunately, the weather was nice, but I was inside the convention center all day so I wasn't able to appreciate it. Ate some dope crabcakes in Georgetown. Had a fantastic dinner at Kinkeads was some bomb diggity desserts (keylime cheesecake, creme brulee trio, and chocolate sampler).
