Whites not qualified to teach Black history

    http://www.newsnet5.com/news/2360897/detail.html

Phyllis Yarber Hogan, a member of the Oberlin Black Alliance for Progress, said a white teacher wouldn't be well-suited to teaching students about subjects like slavery.

"When you talk about slavery, students need to understand it is not our fault," she said. "Our ancestors did nothing wrong to be enslaved.

"How do you work through that when the person teaching it is the same type of person who did the enslaving?"
    ------------
Someone tell this idiot black Africans and Arabs also ''did the enslaving'' and, unlike whitey, still do in parts of that benighted continent.

uh...yeah. i think that's kind of whack. this person needs to go through some kind of racial reconciliation. it's like i don't think all japanese people are bad because of how they treated koreans when they colonized korea.

Yes. Perhaps you should teach a class on neoracism and not let black people teach it.

ahha...they never said a asian couldn't teach black history!!!

anywho...I really don't think it makes any difference what race teaches history in general. They know the damn facts, why not let them teach it. WTF is being a different color all about. Does that make our brains any different? Look...my dad stepped on a bug yesterday...does that mean I can't be a biologist, becuase of what one of my relatives did? Gosh damn...it's not that big of a deal. Let white people teach what they know. Let asians keep making cheap stuff. And let black people rap!

STOP WITH ALL THE FREAKING GENERALIZING AMERICA!!! Get with the program. it's not a big deal!

that's like saying Oberlin Black Alliance for Progress is stupid....

"A group of parents said they will fight a possible decision to allow a white teacher to lead classes in black history at Oberlin High School."

    ALLOW a white teacher????
    eh?
    since when was it forbidden...

Using a white teacher at Oberlin High School would send the wrong message to black students, said A.G. Miller, an associate professor of American and African religious history at Oberlin College.
"The message is that we are not concerned about the importance of your historical background ... that that is less important than a schedule conflict," said Miller, whose three children graduated from Oberlin High School.
yeah, so instead, you're trying to tell your black students that white people can't talk to you about anything because they don't have your "historical background". you should stay with your black folks...talk with your black folks and for the rest of your life, teach the white folks about slavery because no matter how long you tell them what happened, they just will never get it....

did someone get the wrong "training" in history in the first place? .. The Black SLAVES may have done nothing wrong.. but.. they were gathered up by White and BLACKs in Africa.. and sold into slavery... so.. uhmm.. shrugs ... who did nothing wrong ? the African blacks that sold them? that could have ancestors here today also?

Re: Whites not qualified to teach Black history

    *cough* bullsh1t *cough*

Quick triva fact: For the 1800's, there are many historical records that describe some slave owners as being at least partially black, and at the same time, there are accounts of many blonde-haired, blue-eyed slaves.

On the other hand, one of my professors from college is one of the most qualified individuals I know to teach about American Slavery, and, by the way, he is white.

Way to distance black students from white society! The students'll probably grow up resenting white people and teach that to their kids, etc.

It reminds me of some comments I saw posted to a mailing list recently by some Europeans saying that Americans simply don't know history like they (Europeans) do. Sure, their countries and buildings and such have been around for thousands of years longer than most of those in America (aside from native American structures), but they learn their history from textbooks just like everyone else; it's not like they were actually present at every major event in history and thus understand them better than Americans. All right, that's enough of that rant.

I'm incensed as well, and the second that you think your race is superior at something, you should get a boot.... UP YOUR BEHIND!

I would say that if it were 100 years ago, when there were surviving freedmen, they might have more of an impact in their teaching since they went through it, but that's just not possible anymore!

All these events posted here (Slavery, Hollocaust, etc) are part of HUMAN history, the RACE that we all are a part of. Therfore, if any Human has the knowledge to teach about the event, then why should there be a problem?

    Can I just say...

    who gives a sh1t?
It's illegal, it ain't happening now (not here anyway), and I can't be held responsible for something my ancestors may or may not have done, back when it was both legal and acceptable.

    Sheesh.

That's a pretty interesting point. Why do we study any history at all. To get a bit philisophical I think we study history to understand what people are like and what they are capable of doing. Also to learn from our mistakes. But maybe someone can give a better answer.

Can you be held responsible for what your ancestors do? I think it depends on how close you are to them. If you can inherit wealth I don't see why the repution of how that wealth was earned can't come with it. Should you be charged with slavory? I think not.

    Good points.
yes, it's important to study history, for all those reasons.

I did not intend to generalize that much, I was just referring to the specific topic of slavery.

I think their point is that Americans don't know about anyone's history, and I, for one, agree with them. Otherwise, Leno would have to find something other than "Jay Walking" to pass his time.
