Defragging large files problems...

Hey all,

I have been somewhat absent minded as of late... like the last year, and haven't kept up with my defragging. Now I have this problem. I have several large files that are highly defragmented. Normally I wouldn't care too much, but some of the files involve games that I play... like Battlefield 1942 maps and texture files... thus when I try to load the game, it takes like 2min for each map to load. I downloaded O&O's defragger, and have defragged many times to little avail. Anyway, I was wondering if someone could recommend a way to defrag these large files. I have about 18% free space (around 6gigs free). Thanks.

why can't you use microsoft's defragger?

Just right click on the drive and choose Properties, then the Tools tab, then click Defragment Now.

I've tried using Norton's Speed Disk but I found that it would sometimes lock up on large defragment sessions, which has caused me to lose a whole hard drive worth of data (corrupted MBR).

So I've stuck with Microsoft's Defrag and it's good.

I tried using the built in defragger a few times and it did just about nothing....

I had a problem on Norton if my screen saver kicked in while it was trying to do something- caused the program to freeze.

a somewhat unelegant method:

you could backup all your fragmented data (burn them on a CD or something), delete/uninstall, defrag, then restore/reinstall your apps and data. Then for safe measure, defrag again right after. It should do the trick, or at least help.

Everytime I install/uninstall something huge, I will do a defrag in order to keep the disk tidy.
