my windows is not booting up. something about a vmm32.vxd file being missing or corrupt or something. someone said that i had to re-install windows, but i've tried with both a win 98 and a win98 upgrade cd, and neither have worked. it's always a disk compression thing, or existing os message. save me from losing all my files!!!! thanks!

yup same error occurred on my Compaq.......it was still under warranty so I took it to the shop. The only solution they had was REFORMATTING.....sorry..hopefully that's not the case for you. GOOD LUCK on saving your files.

If you have a way into Dos and can navigate it ata all you could find the folders you need and transfer them to another drive or partition if you have one. Even a really old and small one that works

I think copying the file is best.
what did u do that gave you that error. u can try starting in safe mode. I know some file errors occur when not fully installing a windows component but it usually does not prevent a boot. usualy gives u a option of going on with boot.

I had a similar problem (missing system file) and i couldn't copy it from another machine, what i did was (cause thankfully I have two harddrives) is install an os on the second and copy important files onto it. Then once you have the files, copy em back onto the (now reformated) original hard drive.
