computer won't turn on

I just assembled my first computer, an athlon 700, and it will not turn on. At first, I thought it was the power supply. I bought another one and it still did not work. Then, I replaced my motherboard and it still did not turn on. Now, I think that it might be the power switch that came with the case. If any of you have any advice, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Ok here are a few things to try. First, double check to make sure you have the power switch on the case plugged in to the correct pins on the mobo. Also once in awhile power supplies have a switch on the back to turn it on and off. Yours probably wont but check just in case. It will be a pretty big switch, not the small one that says the voltage on it. If none of this works try hooking your reset switch to the mobo pins for the poswer switch. Although the reset switch and the power switch look different they are the same kind of switch (both momentary). Then try using the reset switch to power up the computer. If that works you will know that your case has a bad power switch. Good luck.

Thanks Badfish. I tried your suggestion, but it still doesn't work. Do you know of any other factors or components that prevent my power supply from starting up? Thanks for the effort.

Hmm, this is a strange problem. Especially since you have already tried another power supply. Are you sure that the outlet you are plugging it in to is working? Maybe it has a blown fuse or something. If you are sure the outlet is working try unpluging all of the drives from the power supply so it is just hooked to the motherboard. I dont think any of them could be causing the problem but at least if you do that you will know for sure. The only other thing I can think of is that you may have a bad motherboard. If you have another motherboard laying around try hooking the power supply to it and see what happens. Even if you dont have a processor or ram the fan on the power supply should still turn on so at least you will know it is working. Let me know what you find out.

I emailed the techsupport of my motherboard and they said that I needed a more powerful power supply. The first two that I used were 250 and 300W respectively. I plan on buying a bigger power supply today and I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks alot for your suggestions.

you do need bigger than a 300watter- PLease tell him before he goes and blows 140 bucks on a 400 watter-.

It has to be the switches on that case are not in the mb correct- the power supply is out (2 bad ps, highly unlikely) What kind of mb is it anyways-i am pretty familiar with the sd-11 and the K7m.

After I got my new powersupply, the computer still did not turn on. I went to my cousin's place to check on the case power switch. My switch worked on his computer but his switch did not work on mine. Now, I believe it is the motherboard, so I returned it. I plan to buy an asus k7v motherboard to replace it. Thanks for all of your help.

I had the longest time trying to get my first mobo to work too. I did about all those things and figured out that the reset for my bios was on. so i just had to move the connector (it's to damn late for me to be remembering what those are called) into the other position so it would boot up. stupid me.

i have the same specs as suprrax. 700mhz with the k7v. i have a supertek tnt2 m64 32mb. it is a no-name brand that i got it at a computer show for $60. my first 3d card after years of software rendering. it works great.

Sorry, I didnot keep you all posted on my progress;I had tests and finals the last week. I finally got my computer working. It was the motherboard. The Asus K7V works great. Thanks for all the help.
