SS: crappy coaching experience

for those that remembered, i got a job as a high school vball head coach. well, the whole exp blew!

1) i had to rebuild the vball prog. their previous coach was a player/coach that didn't teach them anything. out of 15 players, 13 of them was the first time playing vball.
2) i thought the players would be appreciative of me coaching them, instead they were unappreciative/snotty/whiny/undisciplined/disrespectful players. every time i asked them to do something, they would ask why or give some excuse.
"run 5 laps"-"WHY?" "you girls need to focus on the game"-"WHY?"
"come to practice on time"-"i have to do something"
3) a parent keeps going over my head doing things behind my back. he tells the athletic director that we don't have enuf balls to practice with (even tho we do), he then brings his niece to come help. i told him that's fine, but we have no money to pay her. he says fine. i just found out today that he personally paid her $850, and now expects the school to reimburse him for it! WTF!
4) there's more little things, but after everything else, i'm only getting paid about $1000 for 6 months of work...

needless to say, i won't be returning next year...

wow, how disillusioning. i don't blame you for not coaching again.

unfortunately, parents seem to be the biggest problem in all of it. if you dared "yell" at the kids to whip 'em into shape some parent would be on your a$$ for disciplining their brat.

it's a no win situation for you.

actually, i do yell a lot at the kids for being so undisciplined, and for the most part, the parents are actually pretty supportive about it.

well then i wonder where they got these attitudes from then?

television, peer pressure. if their friends are doing something and it's cool, they have to do it too...no matter who ignorant, stubborn, stupid, childish, immature, illegal it might be.

in the end, it boils down to negligence on the parents' part.

Yeah thats some gratitude building the program up. And its bad enough dealing with the kids, putting up with a wanna be coach interfering adds to the misery.

The disrespect and discipline attitudes are sadly not surprising and stem from this 60's child-rearing mentality. Yeah its the results of the brats having gotten everything and now believing the world owes them. Its unfortunate the rest of us have to come across this.

In the long run who are the ones ultimately losing out? Not RoniMan who will be go somewhere where he's appreciated.

It might sound sexist, but girls are far harder to coach than guys mainly because of the things you are talking about. Several of my teachers/friends/co-workers refuse to coach high school girls anymore because they are tired of their attitudes. They still coach Jr. High girls, but they say that once the girls move into high school, they become impossible to coach.

Hopefully, this won't discourage you from coaching altogether, but I'm sure you'll be a little more picky in the future.

no, i'm not discouraged. i would have liked to see what i could have done with the program that's all. actually, the attitudes i could have dealt with, i mean what's the point of being a coach if i can't have my power trips? but the girls were getting used to me. however, i looked at how much time i've put into this program (>5months) and how much i'm getting paid (60 hours) WTF!? and i realized that it's not worth it to me in the long run.

i've been coaching for 5 years now, and guys ARE easier to discipline, but girls are more energetic when they play. so i DO have to be more picky in the future.

that's one of the reasons i gave up coaching soccer this year..and i've done it for over 10 years now..the kids on my team i've had since they were little..I chose to advance with them on each level because luckily for me..they needed coaches on each level..this would have been my last year anyway because I have too much other stuff going on that needs more concentration..anyway..I go to the coaches meeting-with the director and all the other league coaches..and we hear that the 13 and UNDER team that I have only has 4 returning kids..ok i say, move up some of the 11 and UP..I'm told I'll get a call with a final roster in a week or so..I don't hear anything and need to plan my schedule for games and whatnot...about 3 days before the league games are to start-i get a call from the ******* coach of the 11 and Under team, telling me that HE decided to BUMP MY KIDS down to his team (because his kid was moving up to my team and he wanted to be his coach)..I was PISSED..he had no authority to do what he did..so i called our sports directer..(she is new)..and she said to me..well there are 48 kids on 11 and Under, would you want to coach one of those teams instead=WELL DUH..wouldn't it be more intelligent to move 11 year olds up to 13 AND UNDER than moving 13 and Unders down to 11 and under?..WHERE IS THE LOGIC? I told her they could shove their coaching position since i've been there the longest and no one had the decency to discuss this with me before they made MY plans.. bah. (I miss my kids though...and the ones who should have been on my team including some move ups from the 11 and under have all quit because this guy/father/lawyer/coach is a pompous douchebag who favors all his kid's friends.
