Unhappy No more G|A at work?

Just got this letter sent to all users at work from the CFO:

    To all staff:

As you all know, the Internet and all of its capabilities have become a prominent part of our operations at the XXXX. From electronic mail to research to our own web site, connectivity to the Web has become an integral part of our everyday operations.

Recently, we’ve noticed an increase in the amount of traffic on our Internet connection. At some points, it appears to have slowed communications because of the volume of traffic across the connection. If this trend were to continue, it could impact our ability to utilize the connection most efficiently in the conduct of the XXXX’s business.

Just like any other resource, it is important that we use our Internet connection as efficiently as possible in the conduct of our business and, in addition, that we have the information necessary to make the appropriate decisions about managing this particular tool of our operation. Accordingly, we are in the process of installing software that will be able to monitor and analyze all the traffic on our Internet connection both incoming and outgoing. We expect this will be in place by tomorrow morning.

We appreciate your assistance in helping us manage this resource appropriately.

Sounds like a lot of people are using their computers for file-sharing activities. Viewing websites won't kill the bandwidth as much as they are claiming. Viewing websites takes up as much bandwidth as the mail server sending/receiving emails. Either people are downloading fugantic files or they are sharing fugantic/many files. In any case, I would love to see them prove that surfing through Google.com really kills the connection.

heh heh, no I don't work in the pr0n biz, if I did they probably wouldn't limit internet access.

I've got a question though... if I've clicked on video files are those in my computer some where? How do I go about finding them and deleting them? TIA for any help/advice.

Did you watch a stream of the video, or did you actually save it to your hard drive?

If you really wanted to see if video files were on your computer, search your hard drive for the following. In the search field just type:

    *.wmv
    *.mpeg
    *.mpg
    *.avi
    *.asf
    *.mov

Those cover the standard video files that corporates use frequently. Search each type of file individually and see if any are on your computer. If you're going to delete them, just make sure they're not related to a program you may be using.

hey, shouldn't you be working instead of surfing the G|A forums?

Thanks so much for the help. I did what you said and didn't find anything interesting, but then it asked if I wanted the search to include hidden & system files... bingo! Deleted the not work related files.

    Thanks again!
