transfering saved emails in outlook to a disk

ok, heres my problem, I need to transfer saved emails in outlook onto a disk so I can put them in outlook on this computer after I reformat it. What would be the easiest way to do this? The export option would seem like the simplest but it doesn't offer a way to save the emails as something, and I tried archive but when I archive I can't open the archive back up in outlook and have the emails there. Do I have to go folder by folder or is there something simple that I am too stupid to see?

Thank you, for helping me, if anyone needs more info or if I was too incoherent just ask
I have an athlon xp 2500+ ... aren't you glad you know that?

Compare the ways to back up items
    Do one of the following:

If you want to create a folder to which you can drag items for safekeeping or to distribute to another computer

Create a new data file (.pst) and drag items to it. If you used the default name for the folder when you created the data file, the folder will be called Personal Folders . In the Folder List, drag any item from your current folders to the new folder. Press CTRL while dragging to copy items instead of moving them.

If you want to create a .pst containing Outlook items but still keep the original data in your default folders

Export (copy) items to a Personal Folders file (.pst). You can only export one folder at a time, but you can include the subfolders under that folder. For example, you can export your entire [Mailbox - Username] including all subfolders.

If you export items based on .lis files to a .pst file, multilingual functionality will be lost.

If you want to automatically back up or delete items that are over a certain age

Use AutoArchive to move items to a an archive file (.pst). Unlike exporting, where the original items are copied to the export file but are not removed from the current folder, archiving copies items to the archive file and then removes them from the current folder. AutoArchive allows you to set up a schedule and archive multiple folders at the same time at set intervals.

When I used outlook, I searched for "inbox" and it showed me the directory where the encoded emails were found (I forget the location). I burned the folder onto a disc, then reformatted and reinstalled...the copied the file back over the new "inbox"

This saved my messages and options and folders and everything.

(The file has a wierd extension like lbx or something)

I wish I could be more specific, but I haven't used outlook in years.

You outlook file can probably be found at:

    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

That is in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. You'll have to have hidden folders viewable.

Generally if you are going to use Outlook on another computer just as you did on the original, the Export to .pst is the best idea. You could just grab your backup folder, but if you want to be more specific of the folders you export(meaning not the sent items or trash) then it is best to do the Export to .pst method.
