Just curious what cards everyone is using for their computers. I have a Fire GL 1000 with the diamond permedia2 chip (i think), but am looking to upgrade within the next month or so. I am not sure what to get. I am looking for an AGP one in the 100-150 price range. Currently I am looking at the Voodoo3 3000 which can be found for about $125 minus $20 bucks for a coupon +whatever is shipping. I was told by a friend though that the voodoo3 didn't have 32 bit (processing?) and that I would probably want that since it makes a significant difference (or maybe not significant but a big diff). Any thoughts on what the best card is for the $ currently? I was also told that maybe i should wait a bit longer since an new generation of cards just came out. Thoughts?

    i'm using a 3dfx 3500.
3dfx does process in 32 bit but it outputs in 16bit.

tnt2, gonna wait till a card comes out with more memory than my system (384). . . although the new geforce II's are tempting. . . damnit, now look what you've done!

    Thumbs up

    I have a Voodoo3 3500, but will have a GeForce 2 in a week or so.

32-bit IS starting to be a big deal. When the TNT2s and V3s first came out a lot of people made a big deal about 32-bit, but yet it really wasn't a big deal. Not a lot of games fully supported it at the time, plus it took a big hit on the cards.

Well, now it is better. The newer cards can run in 32-bit and not take as much of a hit and there are tons of games out or coming out that fully support it.

So, If you want a card that will do true 32-bit (processing AND output) and that will run decent at the higher resolutions with 32-bit enabled, then you will have to raise your price range some more.

hmmm, does anyone think that card prices will drop in the next month or two?? I just don't want to buy a kick ass card, and only use a small portion of what it is capable of, when I could buy a cheaper card that will still be ass kicking good compared to my card right now and then upgrade later as needed in a year or so. Yes, i do play video games and this is my primary reason for getting a new card (i am tired of seeing big squares on quake3 when bullets hit the wall)

    Cool

This also depends on the system you have right now. If your systems sucks, then getting a card like the Vodoo5 or Gforce2 won't do you any good because of the bottle-necks. In this case you really can't get the full effects from those cards. If you have a pretty darn good system and the money, go for the good stuff. Gforce2 baby!!! Or if you like the Vodoo5, go for that one.

If you have a 900Mhz cpu you can maxx the GeForce 2 out.

    Quake3 1600x1200 32-bit High textures with a GeForce 2 and 900Mhz P3... 26.5fps.

So it does all the work to let the quality come out in 32 bit color but it doesn't show you ?
    lol

PS I'm using a Geforce DDR "you know the one that outputs in 32 bit color after it processes it that way "

I'm using a Matrox G400 Max. The dual head feature is very usefull when doing any sort of graphics work.

well, my computer is a PII400 with 128 megs of ram. I haven't really found anything that overly taxes the computer itself (i think it is mostly the crumby video card), how much do you think the GeForce 1 will drop down to after the GeForce 2 has been out for a little while?
