    WiFi weirdness and NetStumbler

So I am running Netstumbler in my apartment and I notice that a couple of times every minute, a new peer (not access point) would appear at the same time one would disappear. These peers have the same SSID but the MAC address is different each time the peer appears. What the heck is going on? Is someone trying to spoof a MAC address to get access to a network or what?

Could be.... it's not YOUR MAC address that's showing up, is it?

We had the same problem at our university on the wireless network. It typically seemed to happen with Netgear and Linksys USB devices, and we're not exactly sure what was causing it. However, it was a simple remedy -- just unplug the USB cable from the device and plug it back in. It seems to be something resident in the memory of the device, and unplugging it just clears it out.

Try that and see if it works. You may want to use a cantenna to pinpoint where the signal is coming from, though, especially if it's a neighbor.
