Metallica didn't just do it on one day, they are still doing it. They just arn't telling people about it because of the huge public backlash they suffered the first timet they did it.

He means they only took names for one day to ban people. Actually, you'll know if you got banned because it tells you that your IP is banned.

I am on Napster right now.

Did you hear that they blocked anyone who was trading Metallica? Actualy it was only from one day. Metallica got ahold of tons of IP addresses one day when they scanned for people trading Metallica songs. So if you were using it that day and traded Metallica, the that is probably why you can't get on.

    Otherwise, I don't know.

i dont believe that they are banning ips - only user names. they dont ban ips because lots of people can be sharing an internet connection, and thus using the same ip, and if only one of them is being "naughty" they cant punish everyone on that ip for it. thats why it is so easy to get back on if you were banned - you just have to get rid of the registry entries for napster and reinstall it with a new user name. if you still cant get through, then access to the napster servers might be blocked by your network admin. at school, or actually by your ISP. but napster isnt banning ips

They don't ban your ip, but with the recent bans, the leave something in your registry so that you can't reinstall unless you have a crack for it.

think they are actually banning mac addresses
-which would mean a whole new nic card in addition to the registry hack, new ip and new username-have three freinds that still say that they are banned after doing the latter 3-

there has been another ongoing thread about this if you want to check it out
    http://www.gotapex.com/ubb/Forum9/HTML/000232.html

somewhere in there was a link on how to get rid of the registry files that napster adds when you get banned, it worked for me, so now I am back on.

i've heard that gnutella is a pretty good replacement; even the inventor of napster was praising gnutella because it's unsueable form.
