Right now it's about oh 3 1/2" on top and a little less on the sides. I want to grow it out to about oh shoulder length or longer, but it's taking a long time and I'm not sure it'll look all that great, but I think I'd like it for it's Jimmy Page-esq qualities. However, I could just cut it very short (about 1/2" from my scalp) anything inbetween just becomes an afro, my hair is too thick to just lay down. What should I do? Maybe I'll post a couple pics...

if your hair is straight, i wouldn't go much longer than that. If it has some flip/waves/curl to it -- something that gives it texture -- you can go longer

we need pics. it's damn hard to know if someone will look good with long hair without knowing what they look like.
and part of it, quite frankly, is personality and what you want to do with yourself. some people are just going to look like tools with long hair -- same thing with having it shaved.
although as merlin so aptly pointed out, a mullet works for everyone
I just trimmed about 1/2" off my hair... then dyed it fire engine red. You should be just like me
or go for the classic David Beckham cut. the one where its a cross between a mullet and a mohawk, or a mullet-hawk as I like to call it.
