I've always heard that it's just more effective to buy a new monitor. But since we have it happen quite often, if I can save them 20 bucks a pop, I'd do it.
I believe the shadowmask is the part in the monitor that suffers from burn in, right? Is there any way to replace this without shocking myself to death?

its not the shadowmask, its the phosphors. Theres no way you can actually replace it either. Even if you wanted to, once you open the tube you'd fill the vacume and screw it up anyway. The only way i can think of to make it not that bad is to figure out what image is burned in and display the inverse of it on the screen for a really long time so essentially the entire screen burns in evenly.

Well, the solution would be ok as long as it doesn't dim the picture. These monitors are left on 24/7 need to have an excellent picture quality. (They are display monitors for a retail company.) Thanks for the help. Got anything else in mind?

use lcd's?
with lcd's...'burn in' can go away after leaving it turned off for an extended period of time. have 2 sets of monitors or something....might cost the company in man-hours though.
We went to LCDs last year, but we still have 500 units in the field all over the country. It's going to be another 2 years before those areas are retrofitted with newer equipment.Originally posted by attgig

you could try degausing the monitor. a guy at work made a degausing ring and fixed some of our monitors
degausing won't fix burn-in, but it will fix a magnatized shadowmask.
Theres pretty much nothing practical you can do gwilks98.
LCD's burn in as well and as a rule of thumb, it takes twice the amount of time it took to burn-in the LCD to un-burn. You just have to leave it off. But for CRT's theres nothing you can do.
ok so do these images not change at all? why not just use a paper sign? if these images rotated ever so often wouldnt that stop burn in. tell the itiots to chenge the pictuers ups some and save some $$$$$$$$$$ in replacement monitors,,,

The problem is that these machines are retail kiosks that run an application the entire time the store is open. For aethetic's sake, we don't let the monitors go into power save mode, even if the store is dead. The opening splash screen for our application has a few moving graphics, but the text on the screen doesn't move. That text is what's burning in.
I'd love to see this program re-vamped, re-worked and made a little more support friendly, but honestly, the only person in the company that can do it doesn't have the time or the funding to justify it.
I just figured if I could save a few more thousand a year, it could help justify a raise.

even the computers that the goons use at Frys or BB or CC have screensavers.
