So it's been like 2 months and i have been trying everything to set up this wireles router
This is what i have
an SMC router with 2 computers connected to it
I bought abelkin wireless router that i connected to the SMC router via a patch cable. Now i am able to see all my shared resources my Dell Axim can sync and grab files from my PC but i can't access the internet.... i have no idea what i'm doing wrong

Burz is it possible that you have a bad cable going from your smc to your wireless router? Also, make sure that you aren't using the "uplink" port on the smc. You should be able to use any other port as if the router were another PC. Do you get any blinking lights on the smc when you plug the wireless router into it?

That is how we have it set up in the office and it works. The wireless router never will say that it has an internet connection, it is just passing along the data. Like chosenfool said make sure the two routers are hooked up through standard ports, not wan ports. And also like he mentioned, make SURE you have DHCP activated on only one of the routers (the one that is hooked directly to the internet.Originally posted by chosenfool
hey, thats similar to my setup: SMC wired router with a motorola wireless router connected to it. what i did was setup the wireless router first to disable DHCP. then setup the way my wireless are gonna connect (WEP with 128bit key, SSID broadcast disabled).
Then connected the wireless router via one of its LAN ports (NOT THE WAN PORT) to one of the LAN ports of the wired router, using a regular patch cable.
unplugged the power cord of the wireless, plugged it back in (to powercycle), then configured the individual wireless cards according to the SSID and the WEP key. the PCI card in one of my systems recognized it right away, in my laptop i had to restart my system.
If it still isn't working for you take the wireless router out of the equation and make sure you can get on the internet without it first.

i can get on the internet without the wireless router just fine, can anyone please tell me why exactly i need to plug in the patch cable comming from the smc standard port into the wireless standard port and no the wan???Originally posted by chadlnc

DNS settings?? do i leave blank or do i give it my ISP gateway?
MAC address?

If you have the internet coming from the cable/dsl modem to the wired router it will be going to the wired router's WAN port. You do not want the wireless router hooked to the wired router by the WAN port because it is not hooked directly to the internet, the wired router has already done the job of getting you on the internet.
On the wireless I have here, I gave it a static ip address. For example, your wired router would be set to 192.168.1.1 and your wireless set to 192.168.1.2, both with a Subnet of 255.255.255.0. Then on the wired router you should have DHCP turned on and set the table give out addresses starting at about 192.168.1.25 or so. Just make sure you are making these changes under the LAN protion of the setup, forget about everything under the WAN portion on the wireless router, it is not performing those duties.
What is the model number on that Belkin router, I'll look up the documentation on it so I can help a little more.

Ok, everything I told you should work, just make sure to make all those changes under the LAN portion of the setup on the wireless router. You can ignore everything under the Internet/WAN section (you aren't hooking it up to the WAN). If it still doesn't work try using the uplink port for kicks. I read through the manual though and everything else seems right.
Just make sure that the IP address of both routers on the LAN side are using the same numbering system, such as 192.168.1.*, where the last number is the only one that is different.

Because you're now sharing the connection that's already been 'routed' from your SMC. No need to route the connection again, since it's already within your LAN. The WAN port is only to connect to networks outside of your LAN (such as the internet).Originally posted by Burzhui

On the wireless, disable everything except the wireless settings. No need to enter any of the above info. Basically, you want your wireless router to act as a switch rather than a router, so leave all of that info blank. Your goal is to let the wired connection handle all of the addresses & routing, and let the wireless just blindly pass packets through to your wireless devices.

Nothing worked, so all i did was change the encription from 128 to 64 and reentered the key into the axim and voila... it worked... i changed it back to 128 it doesn't work, i checked with my friends laptop... same story 128 bit encryption doesn't work but 64 works fine.... i can't believe that this was the problem
as for the access point only when i used to set that my axim would even stop synching and all hell would break loose
sorry i'm lying i also changed the WAN on the wireless router to be static with the IP of my wired router as well as i used the ip of the wired router as the gateway....
that might have done it

He could try flashing the firmware of the router if it's not letting him go with full encryption.
