    Vid Card...should I wait?

my friend and I are thinking about getting a new vid card, but we were reading up on pci express. And about talk, talking about getting rid of AGP and making only pci express vid cards. So in light of that...should I wait?

by the time pci express becomes the standard (if they become the standard), Doom 3 and HL2 (and possibly CS 2) will have been out for a year or two. Could you stand to wait that long?

Well there will be really no performance gain with pci express over agp8x. I would only hold off on a new card now if you are seriously planning on buying a pci express motherboard when it comes out.

I agree with Canta, PE is not going to significantly boost performance (if at all). You are better off just getting a nice card now and upgrading late next year or the year after.

I have always chided people who say "I am going to wait for...". If you are always waiting for the next thing to come out you will never buy anything at all!

I would wait (and am waiting) until the new "killer ap" games come out this summer, and since there will be a rush of ppl buying cards the card manufacturers will flood the market, so lots of good deals should pop up a month or so after HF2 and DOOM3 come out.

There's no substantial point/improvement in upgrading when all of the graphic-intensive games are running on modified Quake 3 engines or similar level. At least in my case, until a bigger leap in technology hits us, Anything above a 9500 Pro will run most games great for the next 4-6 months.
    And closer...

I'd go a step further & say that as long as you have the processor & RAM to back it up, anything as recent as a GeForce 4ti will last you a while. No, you won't be able to run at full resolution & you might have to turn off a few of the options, but if you don't want to buy a new video card every year you certainly don't have to. I have a 9500 Pro that I'm planning on keeping for at least another year.

If you really need one, buy a good one (9800Pro and up). Otherwise wait for the next generation.

Missed something... Are you planning on upgrading to a mobo with pci express at the same time? If not those 9600-9800 cards have been going on sale lately. How often do you normally upgrade? What do you do with your rig? Gamer? HTPC?
I have a 9700np and almost picked up a 9800 with that dell deal but didnt really need the rest of it(comp/lcd/etc). I probably wont buy another card til the next gen cards are brought out and prices drop. That is unless I find a killer deal to upgrade that old ti4600 in my 2nd rig.

Something I read today: motherboards with PCI Express will prolly end up NOT having agp ports because for some reason the performance of engineering test boards using both sucks. So likely you will be forced to upgrade.

In the end you just feel frusterated. I mean it's prudent to wait for somethings but at this low a level your best waiting only long enough to do your research.
