I wouldn't be so quick to believe the Inq...they aren't known for their journalistic integrity.

i agree, but all indications point to ms using the g5 as the cpu of choice for xbox2. ms also bought a bunch of g5's that ultimately got a guy canned from his job in redmond. logically these would go to the mac business unit, but these could haves also been used to start the development of the xbox2 sdk.

No, all indications point to it using a PPC DERIVATIVE for the CPU in the XBOX. That is COMPLETELY different from using a G5. Furthermore, from all indications, the PPC that is to be used is not going to be anywhere compatible with the current gen G5's. MS has learned their lesson, general app CPU's aren't the most efficient (cost or performance) CPU's for a game system.

If the G5 isn't going to the exact processor used ,then why would you develop the games on the g5? I think this is just another example of zealots grasping at straws.

what makes macs so nice is the hardware with a solid OS. all this article says is that MS is using mac hardware with WindowsNT OS. i think thats more of a story than a dev kit for xbox on a mac

    I wouldn't pay $2999 for an Xbox Gen 2

Imagine a windows-based OS that will run FULLY in a G5 - that means one can get a G5 machine, and nuke the hard drive, and run windows on it. I know, its like a step down, but people are willing to do it if it means more powerful windows machines, compared to Athlon's 64-bit systems and Intel's offerings.

and if that happens, this could very well signal the return of IBM as a force to reckon with, and may further get Intel into big trouble, and AMD into bigger trouble, with a 3rd party chip maker taking a slice off the Windows cake.

    just thinking out loud.

The thing is, Microsoft has already learned from the Xbox example, I am 100% certain they will NEVER allow people to do with the Xbox2 as they have with the Xbox.

Furthermore, a G5 is too general, it has been designed for broad-based apps. This whole idea has been proven to be inefficient. Other consoles that operate on derivative chips do much better.

There will be enough changes to make this derivative so different that it wont run Mac proggies. They will make sure of that, and its the only thing that makes sense when you consider the fact that a general processor fails much more than it succeeds.

Lastly, developer kits aren't geared towards one certain computer. You can program languages on any computer as long as the tool set is offered in that OS. I am sure that the Xbox2 is offered on many different platforms, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was offered on Mac at all.

Again, this is ribitch's attempt at showing that Mac is superior. HOwever, where this attempt is...an attempt, is that nobody denies that the PPC processors are good. Its the trash that Apple puts them through that makes the whole system garbage.

Inferring that Mac is somehow better, and has been proven to be suerprior because Microsoft is using a PPC derivative is like saying KIA is better because it uses a Boxster engine. Sure, it may have a good engine, but the rest of the car is still trash.

Ouch the rest is trash Harsh words there. Each computer has their use. They are just tools. I'd rather make sure that the tool that I use works the way I like it.
