did anyone ever shop at these? Theres one by one of the malls i live by and the parking lot always seems pretty empty. Looks like there may be deals on emachines and gateways in the near future.

They are closing the stores and moving their corporate office from Poway to Irvine as a part of the restructuring the the new CEO is doing. They are going to downsize quite a bit in order to try and become profitable again.

    Good riddens (writtens?)

I waited for a Radeon9800Pro from Gateway that was "in stock" and "will ship any day now" for three weeks, before cancelling my order.

    FYI it's riddance.

I think they did much better in the late 90s as a mail order company and have stretced themselves way too thin with the retail stores. Jeez, those were days when I was a fool staring at all the systems in Computer Shopper magazine wishing I could own one of those nice systems. Now I'd rather build my own.

I used to own a gateway back in the early 90's when they were Gateway 2000. At the time it was actually a better system for a better price than Dell.

The problem with Gateway in recent years was that they stopped allowing you to really customize their systems and never had what I would call a really good price....comparatively.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine...Where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been....

I've owned one Gateway and it was one too many.

I bought it in '98. For that year's model, some marketing numb-skull thought it would be cool if the sides of the case were curved.

That's fine until you go to swap a card and the whole case is rocking back and forth under the pressure.

I would have happily swap out the case if the (then expensive) DVD-ROM drive wasn't form-fitted to the case.

the gateway stores were actually very well thought out. They only have like a couple hundred or so stores and it's within like 20 miles for 90% of the US population. unfortunately, they couldn't pump out the deals like dell did.
