If you're serious about your online gaming or want to run your own LAN, go DSL.

If you're only gonna surf and download, go cable.

In theory DSl, you do not share the bandwidth of the Pipe to your neighborhood with DSL, but as mentioned check your are for performance and cost issues. I live in S. Florida and the DSL is the same rated speed of Cable and the pricing is similar, but not the same all over. I live in an older neighborhood so there are not many cable subscribers and I have had it for 3.5 yrs so I stay put. for now.....
Oh and Speed Matters, I would not move if high speed wasn't available in the area...

Cable is better if you are going to make a ftp server, or make websites and use your modem as the server for the website cause cable modems have static ip addresses while the dsl that costs the same price doesn't. Plus my cable is much faster then dsl.

My DSL line runs almost as fast as the T3 line I use at UCLA. I have a static IP and it costs the same as all of my friends' cable modems. Go DSL

This is a perfect example why you shouldn't ask technical or financial questions in here. This guy has no clue what he/she is talking about. DLS or cable has nothing to do with static or non-static IP address allocation. Even if you had a non-static IP address, you can always get a dynamic DNS. Let's stick to bargains and deals.

I agree with the first response.
Some DSL providers have static IP's others
don't and you may have to pay extra for it.

Some cable networks may be setup poorly where there are shared bandwidth problems.

I tried both DSL and Cable and found the cable service to be :

1. More reliable.DSL service was spotty with both Bell Atlantic and Telocity.(Take advantage of free monthly offers.)

2. Cable was much faster in upload and dnld in order to reach the same results with DSL I would have to pay extra.

3. Price is pretty much the same $49/month
and includes modem (if you have a cable tv
service or digital phone service it is discounted to $39/month). DSL didn't have the same offers,but may soon.

4. I would recommend try both services(most
services have a 30 day trial period) and see which one is best in your area for a price you can afford. Also look into getting a Dlink or Linksys router switch to share your internet connection.

calculators and bandwidth tests as well as
reviews of the service providers out there.

Good Luck everyone's findings will vary with location. Some areas have good DSL some have good cable...
