The Final Assault on Your Body---Viewings

I have always had mixed feelings about viewings. I think they are somewhat barbaric.

You get pumped full of chloroform and decorated without your permission. And then a mob full of people , 3/4 of which haven't spoken to you in decades see you in your new found birthday suit.

And at the funeral, the pastor or whomever remarks how much of a saint you were during your life.

    Maybe it's just me.

Your viewing isn't about you any more. It's about the people in one's life. It is supposed to give closure.

Besides, you're dead, what do you care?

Eh, I've always found death related rituals and ceremonies to be somewhat primitive and barbaric in general. (When I say barbaric, I mean indicative of a more primitive and superstitious culture, not brutal and cruel)

When I die, cremate me, plant a great elm, and fertilize the ground beneath it with my ashes.

I agree. Although it is nice that people come to church to pray for your soul. Speaking of which I have to go to a viewing this evening. My friend's grandmother passed away.

I just want to be wrapped in newspaper and set out on trash day. It's not like I'd be able to hear people at my funeral saying all those wonderful things about me anyway. Although if my family did insist on a funeral, I would want something rigged where my body would sit up at random intervals.

Viewings make those people who HAVEN'T spoken to you in years feel guilty about not doing so-call it your final revenge-they feel like hell for days.

99.998% of Irish funerals have an open casket (and open bar shortly thereafter). The only time we would have a closed casket is when the person was in a car accident or something similiar. Viewings are for the family, really. It helps them get closure after losing you. It also helps them see you one last time the way they would like to remember you, not the way you died.

When my grandmother had a massive stroke, my parents knew her end was near. I wanted to come up to see her one last time, but my Dad told me not to. He told me that she wasn't concious, had tubes all over and she looked horrible. Grandma was already brain-dead; she wasn't there anymore and it would be much better if I didn't see her that way. I agreed reluctantly and waited instead for her funeral after she passed a few days later. In hindsight I know he was right.
    I think over again
    My small adventures, my fears.
The small ones that seemed so big,
For all the vital things I had to get and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing, the only thing:

To live to see the great day that dawns,
And the light that fills the world.

last i checked, that was aritual/ceremony of sorts too. So to completely bypass this problem, what needs to be done is when you die; poeple just need leave your body there to decompose over time.

I don't want anyone to see me after I'm dead, except for my family, and even they aren't required. I want to be toasted until golden brown and then stuffed into an oversized urn, to be passed around among those who knew me.

Why? Because I look good in other people's living room

I want to be shot in to space and burn up upon re-entry, thus my funeral will be like my life bright and brilliant but short and fleeting as well. (cause I'll be a shooting star)

I read that wrong at first and thought it said "I want to be toasted until golden brown and the stuffed into an oversized bun, to be passed around among those who knew me."

Whatever you want to have done, make sure it is in writing (will) and your family knows where it is. Otherwise, they'll do what they want instead of what you want.

Not really. Its the most practical method of disposal, and best use of resources. Maybe the elm is a bit much. I could fertilize any number of things, or my ashes used in a variety of skin care substances at the local spa .

Eh, funerals are like every other ceremony in your life (graduations, wedding, etc.). They're for everyone else to enjoy at your expense.
