    Front Speakers

I don't really have a need for surround sound in my new apartment but I am shopping around for a couple front speakers. If my budget were around $300 what would you guys recommend.

I have taken a listen to JBL speakers and have always liked the sound of them. I know I can get a pair of bookshelf speakers within my price range.

Are there any other brands that you guys can recommend. I would like to be able to use these speakers in the future when I do feel a need to have surround sound again.

    I have a Kenwood VR-605 receiver.

Everybody likes different things in speakers. Just listen to them. If you like the way they sound and can afford them- Perfect!

For $300, the JBL S-38's are a great choice. If you wanted to spend just a wee bit more, the S312's will do just about everything you could want and then some. The 12" woofers really bark when you want them too (Shoot out scenes like The Matrix), yet the tweeters and mids sound great as well. I have both the 38s and 312s, and highly recommend both.

I'm with IrishSS. I liked both the S312's and S38's. S310's I didn't like nearly as much, strangely.

Energy EXl-150's or C-1's are both nice sounding speakers. I would definitely recommend listening to different brands.

that system is the current HTIB rage on the home theater forums i've read. its a great deal but watch out for $100 shipping. i think circuit city has the for 400 or 450. the old model 660 should be on clearance from some places.

how about the JBL NSP-1 Northridge set? i think they have a great sound but i don't need another set of speakers.

Ray, I've got that package. Awesome value for the money. Not enough power to dent your eardrums, but I'm not really into that. I just want really crisp sound, and it delivers. Also, lots of inputs on the receiver, which is cool.

I'm not really a fan of the new JBL series. I've been talking to Apex and we both agreed that certain old S-series speakers from JBL sounded better than their newer ones. Apex linked me up with a website that has the speakers I want (JBL S38), but I'm still shopping around to see if there is something else.

I like my s36's and plan to move them to the back when upgrade to the s38's.
What about Polk audio? Frys has those R50's on sale for $200 a pair every so often.
